Subway Edifies NFL Partnership Too Drive Sales

Fall is in mid-swing and winter is on its way.  Basketball is over, Baseball is about finished, as consumers move from the backyard BBQ too food delivery, Microwave, and stove they will also be spending more and more time watching NFL Football and Subway is aiming to drive new electricity into the brand with and expanded NFL commercial with Deion Sanders and it will work according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.

Regular readers of this blog know that according to Johnson, differentiation does not mean different it means familiar.  That said NFL Hall of Famer Sanders is familiar, liked and leaves some “interesting” autographs at a meet-and-greet. The commercial promotes the Footlong Season offer of a free footlong when you buy two and the new Buffalo Chicken Sandwich.

When you balance the familiar with discovery aka a new product both Gen Z and Millennials will line-up for to try the product according to Johnson. So, for the discovery Subway released its new LTO Collection of chicken sandwiches inspired by game day staples:

The new Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Chicken: This sub includes our tender chicken strips and new Buffalo sauce, made exclusively with Frank’s Red Hot sauce, toasted on your favorite bread and topped with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and ranch dressing.

The new BBQ Chicken: Stuffed with tender chicken strips toasted with sweet BBQ sauce, Subway recommends getting this sub topped with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, red onions and pickles.

Johnson stated “that in my minds-eye the new electricity must be very efficient for the supply chain and includes such things as fresh foods, online ordering, delivery, plant based foods, sampling, toy’s, cereal, developing brands,  grocerant positioning, fresh food messaging, autonomous delivery, cashier-less retail, plates, glasses, cash-less payments, digital hand-held marketing.

All food and beverage retailers to survive the next generation of retail must embrace the artificial intelligence revolution while simultaneously embracing fresh food and beverages that are portable, fresh, with differentiation that is familiar not different.  Does your retail path forward look more like yesterday than tomorrow? Why?
