At the intersection of what’s for dinner
and fast food recently two
east coast Shoprite’s have debuted a foodservice at retail concept: “Fresh
to Table,” with an emphasis on fresh, easy to prepare ingredients, and
grab-and-go.
Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®
reiterated once again on the importance of “focusing on the consumer, time
starved, diminished cooking from scratch still set, and increased demand for
more international flavors than generations before; grocerant niche fresh prepared
food fills and increasing gap for menu options.”
Regular readers of this blog know that consumers
have been increasingly turning to grocery store foodservice as part of meal planning and an ongoing trend toward
food-at-home. In order to compete with fast food restaurant meal options that
are both fresh and fast grocery stores must offer meals and meal component
bundling options that invite consumers to their brand over a restaurants brand.

The two ShopRite’s new designed
within the store’s existing footprint, the Fresh to Table concept includes
sections with ready-to-cook items (“Prep & Eat”), ready-to-heat and serve
items (“Heat & Eat”), and ready-to-eat meals (“Grab & Eat”).
We refer to grocerant niche as
Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat as do most consumers. Fresh and fast requires
options for all family members even if they do not all sit down for dinner at
the same time.
One of the benefits of the concept also
has foods from ShopRite’s private label lines,
including the brand’s Bowl & Basket and Wholesome Pantry products. Remember that Gen Z and Millennials are still
seeking fresh food discovery. That is why it is important that Shoprite consumers
can also access Fresh to Table options using the stores’ online shopping
service.
In case you did not know, the ShopRite
of Norwich and the ShopRite of New London (both located in
Connecticut) are operated by Five Star Supermarkets, owned by the Capano
family.
