Starbucks is headed by Howard Schultz who is
without question the greatest food merchant in the world today according to
Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® Grocerant Guru™ Steven Johnson. Schultz
has amassed a team of industry professionals and consultants that have an
exemplary record of integrating the Five Pillars of Retail Food Sales to drive
top line growth and bottom line profits.
For the first 20 years of the company Starbucks
under Schultz refused to sell food, insisted they would never sell food, and
rejected any ideation to introduce food sales.
However success does leave clues and Schultz consummate merchant picked
them up.
Today fresh prepared, Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat
menu items are driving continued growth at Starbucks. Utilizing tried and true
restaurant marketing tactics Starbucks is currently serving added several limited
time offers this month geared toward lunch, according to DataEssential.
The
new items include a "superfoods bistro box" featuring kale cakes and
blueberries, prosciutto and mozzarella pinwheels, a BBQ beef brisket sandwich
on sourdough bread, and a Santa Fe chicken flatbread. The restaurant
sector should be concerned as Starbucks looks as if it is determined to both the
QSR’s and the fast casual sectors a run for its money.
Starbucks
is in a unique position to take over restaurant industry leadership, according
to a recent report by Goldman Sachs. "Starbucks is virtually the only
large incumbent that can offer millennial parents the convenience of a (fast
food chain) and food they would not feel guilty/embarrassed to feed to their
kids," one Goldman Sachs' analysts wrote.
One
Deutsche Bank analysts believes that more food offerings will drive sales at Starbucks. Is it just that simple NO. Starbucks is a Food Merchant not just another
food outlet focusing on brand building and sales growth.
When
your brand building blocks are and have been built around customization, personalization,
and quality
differentiation evolving success is not an issue.
