From February 17 through March 24, Wawa is rolling out its unbeatable $5 Big Breakfast Deal, offering customers any size hot or iced coffee, a Sizzli® breakfast sandwich, and a hash brown—all for just five bucks. With 1,100 locations executing at peak efficiency, Wawa proves why it dominates the convenience dining space in both price and speed of service.

Mix & Match: A Bundled Deal That Delivers

The food industry has long known that mix-and-match meal bundling is a pricing strategy that boosts both customer satisfaction and sales. Wawa’s $5 Big Breakfast Deal gives customers full control over their morning choices while keeping costs low. With over 10 Sizzli® varieties—including classics like Croissant, Bacon, Egg & Cheese and the limited-time French Toast, Sausage, Egg & Cheese—this deal offers premium variety at a price Starbucks and fast-food chains simply can’t match.

Speed of service is the name of the game in breakfast, and Wawa’s streamlined, self-serve model runs circles around competitors. Customers can grab their breakfast in minutes—no long lines, no waiting for a barista. Wawa’s self-serve coffee pour bar features seven varieties, including Regular, Decaf, French Vanilla, Hazelnut, Cuban Roast, 100% Colombian, and Dark Roast, with rotating limited-time flavors like Caramel Cream. Prefer iced coffee? Wawa’s handcrafted, freshly brewed iced coffee is customizable in dozens of ways through its in-store ordering kiosk, ensuring a quick and personalized experience every time.

Wawa’s Legacy of Breakfast Innovation

"We are on a mission to make mornings easier for our customers, and our new $5 Big Breakfast Deal does just that by providing a hearty offering at a great price that’s sure to get your morning off to a great start," said Mary-Rose Hannum, Chief Marketing Product Officer at Wawa.

First introduced in 1996, the Sizzli® breakfast sandwich remains a customer favorite nearly 30 years later—proving that Wawa understands the evolving needs of breakfast consumers better than most. With an unmatched combination of value, speed, and quality, Wawa’s $5 Big Breakfast Deal is a game-changer in the foodservice industry.

Chain Restaurant Business Model is Broken

As the Grocerant Guru®, I’ve spent decades analyzing the ebb and flow of the retail foodservice industry, and it’s clear that the chain restaurant business model is broken. The price, value, and service equilibrium, once the cornerstone of successful dining establishments, has dramatically shifted. Yet, many legacy restaurant chains remain stubbornly anchored in the past, unwilling to adapt to the evolving demands of today’s consumers. This stagnation has led to a capitulation of both customer counts and market share.

The Shifting Equilibrium: Price, Value, Service

The concept of value in the restaurant industry has always been a delicate balance between price, quality, and service. However, in recent years, the definition of value has broadened significantly. Consumers today are not just looking for a meal; they are seeking an experience. This includes everything from the convenience of ordering to the ease of sharing their experiences on social media.

The traditional pillars of the industry—price and service—are no longer sufficient to guarantee success. The rise of digital platforms and the growing importance of social media have introduced new variables into the equation. Consumers now expect seamless digital interactions, personalized experiences, and, importantly, the ability to enjoy their meals wherever they choose. The pandemic only accelerated these trends, as dining habits shifted from in-restaurant experiences to takeout, delivery, and curbside pickup.

Legacy Chains: Clinging to the Past

Many legacy chains have failed to keep pace with these changes. They continue to rely on outdated business models, emphasizing low prices and standardized service at the expense of innovation. This approach has led to a significant decline in customer loyalty and, consequently, a loss of market share. According to industry data, many of these chains have seen a drop in foot traffic by as much as 20% over the past five years, with some brands losing as much as 10% of their market share.

The inability to adapt has been starkly evident in the performance of these legacy brands. The National Restaurant Association reported that, in 2023, over 30% of the top 50 chain restaurants experienced a decline in customer visits, a clear indicator that their traditional business models are no longer resonating with modern consumers.

The New Formula: Price + Quality + Social Discovery + Portability = Value

At Tacoma, WA-based Foodservice Solutions®, we’ve always believed in evolving with the consumer. As the Grocerant Guru®, Steven Johnson has retooled, reevaluated, calculated, and evolved the formula for success in today’s market. The new formula is simple yet profound: Price + Quality + Social Discovery + Portability = Value.

1.       Price: While price remains a critical factor, it’s no longer the sole driver of value. Consumers are willing to pay more for higher quality and unique experiences.

2.       Quality: This goes beyond the taste and presentation of food. It includes the quality of ingredients, the transparency of sourcing, and the healthfulness of menu options.

3.       Social Discovery: In the age of Instagram and TikTok, the social aspect of dining has become crucial. Restaurants must create experiences that encourage sharing on social media, turning customers into brand ambassadors.

4.       Portability: The convenience of enjoying meals on the go has become a non-negotiable aspect of modern dining. This includes packaging that keeps food fresh and presentable, as well as efficient delivery and pickup options.

Evolving with Consumers

Success leaves clues, and one of the most vital clues in today’s market is the necessity of evolving with consumers. Brands that fail to adapt to changing consumer preferences risk irrelevance. The Grocerant Guru® formula highlights the importance of embracing new trends and technologies, from digital ordering platforms to innovative menu items that cater to health-conscious and environmentally aware diners.

Think about this, the chain restaurant business model is indeed broken, but it’s not beyond repair. By embracing a new value equation that considers price, quality, social discovery, and portability, restaurants can reclaim their place in the hearts of consumers. The future belongs to those who are willing to evolve and innovate, meeting consumers where they are and exceeding their expectations.

EG America Embraces the Grocerant Niche with $5 Meal Deals

Yes, the Grocerant Guru® has long championed the appeal of mix-and-match meal component bundling, a hallmark of the grocerant niche. This summer, the team at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® believe that EG America is setting a new standard by leveraging this approach to captivate both new and returning customers with their $5 meal deals. This strategy not only caters to the on-the-go lifestyle of summer travelers but also reinforces the value-driven dining experience that today's consumers crave.

Customization at the Core

EG America's $5 meal deal epitomizes the essence of customizable convenience. Which started June 19 and running through September 3, customers can create their perfect meal combination from the following options:

·         Main Course: Choice of any two roller grill items or two cheese or pepperoni pizza slices.

·         Beverage: Choice of a 1-liter bottle of Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Aquafina, or Brisk.

·         Snack: Choice of Lay's, Miss Vickie's, Ruffles, or Sun Chips in 1.375-ounce or 1.5-ounce bags.

By allowing customers to mix and match these components, EG America taps into the grocerant trend of personalized dining experiences, making meal times not just convenient but also tailored to individual tastes and preferences. Brian Ferguson, EG America's chief marketing officer, highlights this value proposition, stating, "Our new $5 summer meal deals offer our guests a quick meal on the go, at a great price."

More Than Just a Meal

In addition to the $5 meal deal, EG America is enticing customers with other appealing offers. Their doughnut combo, available from June 19 through September 4, includes two doughnuts and a large hot or iced coffee for just $4. As Michael Limoges, senior vice president of store operations, notes, "Few food items go better with coffee than a doughnut, and with this deal, we're offering our guests both."

EG America's focus on enhancing the coffee experience is another strategic move, emphasizing their reputation for quality beverages. The introduction of their XL cup size ensures that customers can enjoy more of their favorite coffee, adding both convenience and value to their daily routines.

A Commitment to Convenience and Value

With over 1,600 retail locations under various banners including Cumberland Farms, Kwik Shop, and Turkey Hill, EG America is well-positioned to deliver these value-driven deals across the country. The company’s commitment to providing quick, affordable, and customizable meal options aligns perfectly with the grocerant model, which prioritizes convenience, quality, and personalization.

This summer, as travelers hit the road, EG America's innovative meal deals offer them a refreshing alternative to traditional fast-food options. By embracing mix-and-match meal component bundling, EG America not only attracts new customers but also encourages repeat visits, fostering loyalty through value and variety.

In the ever-evolving landscape of convenience retail, EG America's $5 meal deals are a testament to the power of the grocerant niche. They demonstrate that by prioritizing customer preferences and offering customizable, affordable meal options, convenience stores can significantly enhance their appeal and drive customer frequency. As the Grocerant Guru®, I applaud EG America for their forward-thinking approach and look forward to seeing more retailers adopt similar strategies.
