Pilot Flying J’s Food First Footprint Fuels Success

Success does leave clues and grocerant niche fresh food has been the platform of success that most food retail choose when they decide to evolve their brans with customer relevance and Pilot Flying J has made the right choices according to Steven Johnson, Tacoma, WA based Grocerant Guru® at Foodservice Solutions®.
When it comes to homestyle comfort foods PJ Fresh offering at Pilot Flying J are filled with grocerant grab-n-go fresh food options that make the ‘pit-stop’’ well worth it according to Johnson. In an effort to drive incremental growth Pilot Flying J developed a third branded footprint called Pilot Express unit as a way to enter areas where a typical major travel center won't fit from a land and acreage standpoint.
Pilot Flying J Chief Merchant Brian Ferguson describes the Pilot Express concept as a "Food first" unit. Pilot Express stores spotlight the retailer's commitment to food and beverage innovation, offering homestyle meals, grab-and-go and made-to-order sandwiches and salads, premium beverages, a bean-to-cup coffee experience and weekly limited-time offers.
Ferguson continued "We want you to walk in to an experience that you've never [had] at a Pilot before. We created a store environment that's about getting you fueled quickly, giving you tremendous options in food and beverage, and getting you out quickly,"
 Pilot Flying J's Vice President of Food Innovation Shannon Johnson said Pilot Express stores have found a sweet spot by offering a variety of food offers that meet different needs. The winning equation includes:
·         Anticipating guest need — both immediate transaction and relaxing destination;
·         Being varied and flexible — in the same store, you can see a hot homestyle offering that allows a guest to eat and relax next to a grab-and-go item for the person of the go;
·         Splitting grab-and-go into two categories: hot and chilled; and
·         Tying in authenticity and quality.
"We went out to market with a variety of food offers all at the same time and what we found was somewhat unexpected: that the blend of all those things was how we’re going to win," Shannon Johnson shared. "It really differentiates us in the marketplace because a lot of our competitive set doesn’t have the mix of offers that we do. We learned so much from Pilot Express." Is your business ready to evolve?

Shopping for a Whopper Burger Kings Fresh Fun Food Platform

Success does leave clues and partnerhisp continue to be the platfrom drving top line sales and bottom line profits for most food retailers today according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions.
Just go shopping and you can earn a Whopper as Burger King is hijacking the biggest shopping week of the year, by making other brands buy you a Whopper sandwich. This is such a good idea that I’m sure you are going to want to try it.
It’s simple just go to WHOPPER-SHOPPER.com, a new website from the BK brand that only features online banner ads from other brands so that they can be the ones to pay for your next Whopper sandwich.
So, how does this work exactly? When somebody clicks a banner on a website and buys something from a brand, the owner of the website gets a percentage of the sale from that brand. With WHOPPER-SHOPPER.com, each time somebody clicks on one of the banner ads and purchases something, the company pays the Burger King brand money. Money that BK will give back to our guests in the tastiest form we know—with Whopper sandwich vouchers1.
WHOPPER-SHOPPER.COM is now live and will working through Cyber Monday on November 26 while supplies last for US residents only. Due to high demand, there will be a limit of three Whopper sandwich vouchers per eligible participant. The vouchers will be sent to participants shortly after the end of the promotion. Whopper sandwich vouchers will be distributed as $5 Burger King Gift Cards.

Can Restaurant Customer Migration be Stopped

Once again this year recent Foodservice Solutions® Grocerant ScoreCards indicate that restaurant customer migration is driven by the 65 Inch HDTV Syndrome first identified by our own Grocerant Guru®, Steven Johnson back in late 2011.
The line between restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores, drug stores, and new non-traditional food retailers is growing ever thinner. The fight for America's food dollars continues to intensify as consumers find fresh prepared Ready-2-Eat food options at a wide and growing array of outlets across almost every channel.
While manufacturers, retailers and restaurants worry about choice overload, consumers have embraced their new choices and show no signs of returning to the old ways. This fight is taking place in what is called the grocerant niche. One thing is clear there in an sharp increase in the battle for share of stomach according to Johnson.
Regular readers of this blog know that restaurant industry is not an industry known for trying to be first as in fastest to market with an ideation, food or technology advance. In the United States the larger the chain in almost all cases the more slowly they are to adopt something than a smaller chain or independent restaurants will. Chain restaurants goal is simple feed one meal at a time in the restaurant while protecting and edifying the brand.
While historically chain restaurant leaders have denied the credibility of start-up competitors as non-relevant. Today, we find that it is the legacy foodservice trade press that is in denial that new non-traditional fresh food outlets have garnered their legacy customers.  The ‘over saturation’ is in fact simply a lack of customer relevance that continues to result in customers seeking new venues to obtain fresh food and fresh meal components.
It is at the intersection of the consumer, fresh prepared food and technology we fine that consumer eating behavior is evolving and is now beyond the control of traditional food marketers. Consumers are dynamic not static and brands must be dynamic as well. Are you capitulating year over year customer counts moving up? Or are your year over year customer counts in decline?
The retail food world is evolving at an ever-increasing pace filled with innovation in food, portion size, points of distribution, and quality fresh prepared meal solutions. The price, value, service equilibrium is resetting in retail foodservice. In order to edify the brand and reinforce consumer relevance restaurateurs must leverage Foodservice Solutions® 5P's of food marketing.
Many legacy food retailers continue to practice brand protectionism, stifle the brand while diminishing consumer relevance. The consumer is dynamic not static. Brands must be dynamic, evolving with the consumer.

Can’t Beat them Buy into them Aramark’s Smart Growth

Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® late last year called 2018 the year of ‘partnerships’ in retail foodservice.  One of the better examples driving growth involves a new partnership developed by Aramark a global leader in food, facilities, and uniforms whereas Aramark believes that this strategic partnership will provide new electricity driving incremental sales.
What is your new electricity that is driving top line sales and bottom line profits?  Are your customer counts growing?  So, just what is your brands new electricity? According to Johnson, “Brand relevance is in part driven with innovation in new food products in combination with new avenues of distribution all of which are the platform for the new electricity.”
Johnson stated “that in my minds-eye the new electricity must be very efficient for the supply and includes such things as fresh foods, developing brands, unique urban clothing, grocerant positioning, urban farming (produce, seafood, etc.), autonomous delivery, cashier-less retail, plates, glasses, cash-less payments, digital hand held marketing. This program has all of that.
Foodservice retailers to survive the next generation of retail must embrace the artificial intelligence revolution while simultaneously embracing fresh food that is portable, fresh, with differentiation that is familiar not different.  That will require brands to embrace new fresh food partnerships more now than ever before according to Johnson.
So, when Aramark, announced a strategic partnership with Oath Pizza to bring the pizzeria’s Certified Humane brand to new, exclusive locations, from university campuses and sporting arenas to offices, hospital cafés and more. Johnson new it was a valued brand with complexity free messaging.
However, creating a point of greater differentiation Aramark edified its belief in Oath Pizza, by investing in it. Orth Pizza which has gained a cult-following for its signature thin crust pizzas that are grilled and seared in avocado oil and feature ethically sourced ingredients.
Victor Crawford, a Chief Operating Officer for Aramark stated “We innovate continually to enhance consumers’ food experiences with unique and on-trend culinary solutions that are also local and sustainable,” … “Our partnership with Oath will further enable us to provide a high quality, convenient, healthy and personalized menu option, not to mention a great-tasting pizza with a purpose.”
As regular readers of this blog know Aramark is one of the largest food service providers in the country and serves clients in multiple sectors, including education (colleges and universities; K-12 schools and districts), healthcare (hospitals and healthcare facilities), sports and entertainment (stadiums, arenas and amphitheaters; destinations and cultural attractions), and business and government (workplaces and manufacturing facilities; convention centers and conference centers).
The ability for Aramark to extend the halo of ‘better-for-you’ food to new avenues of distribution including schools will provide incremental value to Oath Pizza and Aramark according to Johnson. .  Most of you understand that the foodservice sector is dynamic not static and companies in it must evolve or simply fade away.
“Oath Pizza CEO Patrik Hellstrand. Stated We are thrilled to be partnering with Aramark to scale up and reach new audiences,”  “This partnership will give Oath Pizza access to unique and exclusive dining options to bring our certified humane and ethically-sourced pizzas to a greater number of people who love delicious food and want to feel good about their eating decisions.”
