What Women Want for Dinner

When it comes to answering the timeless question, "What's for dinner?", today's food industry must not overlook the changing preferences and powerful buying influence of women. Women — across all generations — continue to shape grocery shopping habits, food preparation trends, and menu expectations, but their tastes, motivations, and shopping behaviors are evolving rapidly.

According to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA-based Foodservice Solutions®, female consumers remain the primary food purchase decision-makers in the U.S. marketplace. In fact, 84% of all women across Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X, and Boomer households report they are either the primary or shared food shoppers.

In 2025, an estimated 65% of all dinner ingredient purchases will still be made by women, particularly Gen X and Millennial moms, according to Food Marketing Institute research. Furthermore, 70% of women across all age groups report preparing dinner at least four times per week. Even among younger Gen Z women, known for embracing convenience, nearly 55% say they actively participate in meal planning and cooking several nights a week.

Brands and marketers that understand price consciousness, flavor preferences, and portion control for female consumers across generations will drive loyalty and dinner-time success. Here's what modern women want for dinner today, based on fresh research:

Gen Z Women (ages 18-27)

Characteristics: Value health, convenience, customization, and shareability for social media.

·       Flavor Trends: Light global flavors (poke bowls, Mediterranean, Thai salads).

·       Price Sensitivity: Budget-focused; 78% seek value and deals but won't sacrifice healthiness.

·       Portion Size: Lighter, snackable portions that fit flexible eating patterns.

Examples:

1.       Build-Your-Own Poke Bowls — $10–$13; customizable, colorful, and perfect for Instagram.

2.       Vegan Snack Boxes (Hummus, Veggies, Edamame) — $7–$9; healthy, affordable, and portable.

Millennials (ages 28-43)

Characteristics: Wellness-driven, eco-conscious, adventurous in flavors, tech-savvy grocery shoppers.

·       Flavor Trends: Authentic ethnic foods (Moroccan tagine, Korean bibimbap) and plant-based innovation.

·       Price Sensitivity: Strong focus on quality/value balance; willing to pay more for organic or sustainable options.

·       Portion Size: Moderately sized meals; interest in leftovers for next-day meals.

Examples:

1.       Sustainable Seafood Meal Kits (Salmon, Quinoa, Greens) — $16–$19; fresh and planet-friendly.

2.       Plant-Based Grain Bowls — $12–$15; hearty yet healthy with layered global flavors.

Note: 53% of Millennial moms "always" read ingredient labels to ensure food quality, focusing on organic and clean-label foods.

Gen X Women (ages 44-59)

Characteristics: Value-driven, time-strapped, health-aware but crave indulgence occasionally.

·       Flavor Trends: Classic American, updated with a healthy twist (grilled chicken bowls, cauliflower mash).

·       Price Sensitivity: Highly focused on getting maximum value; 82% seek promotions and loyalty discounts.

·       Portion Size: Moderate; balancing fullness with healthy calorie counts.

Examples:

1.       Grilled Chicken and Vegetable Family Meals — $22–$30; healthy, fast, and family-friendly.

2.       Comfort Food Lite (Turkey Meatloaf, Mashed Cauliflower) — $15–$18; traditional taste, healthier profile.

Baby Boomers (ages 60-78)

Characteristics: Focused on health, brand loyalty, familiar flavors, portion-controlled options.

·       Flavor Trends: Lightened-up classics (roast chicken, broiled fish) and Mediterranean influences.

·       Price Sensitivity: Value-focused; prefer deals and loyalty rewards.

·       Portion Size: Smaller, senior-sized portions emphasizing balance.

Examples:

1.       Broiled Cod with Steamed Vegetables — $14–$18; classic preparation, heart-healthy.

2.       Heritage Comfort Meals with Lighter Ingredients — $12–$16; manageable portion sizes for less waste and better health.

Key Takeaways for Brands and Marketers

·       Women are still perimeter shoppers. 68% of Millennial and Gen X women prefer fresh foods from the perimeter of the grocery store.

·       Ingredient transparency matters. Clean-label marketing continues to win; 76% of women across generations want simple, recognizable ingredients.

·       Convenience is queen. 64% of Millennial and Gen X women say they are willing to pay more for time-saving meal solutions.

·       Flavor variety drives engagement. Women, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, crave variety — global, plant-forward, and customizable options are critical.

·       E-commerce grocery buying is rising among women. 42% of Millennial women now regularly order groceries online, with a growing preference for hybrid shopping (pickup and delivery).

Brands that tailor their menu development, marketing strategies, and portion sizing to meet women’s evolving dinner needs will not just win a sale — they'll earn long-term loyalty.

Because at the end of the day, across all generations, one truth remains:

"Mom knows what’s for dinner — and she wants it healthy, flavorful, and just the right price."

Gen Z and Millennials: The Relevance of Timely Content

From the bustling aisles of your favorite restaurant, deli, or convenience store to the dynamic feeds of social media platforms, one thing is clear: capturing the attention of Gen Z and Millennials is crucial for any brand's success. Steven Johnson the Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®, has said confidently, understanding and leveraging creator-generated content is a game-changer. Let's dive into the fresh facts and insights from a recent consumer sentiment survey commissioned by NCSolutions (NCS) to explore why this timely content matters more than ever.

The Influence of Creator-Generated Content

Creator-generated content, often referred to as influencer content, has become a driving force in consumer purchasing decisions. According to the NCS survey, nearly half of Americans (48%) have purchased a product they saw featured in creator-generated content on an entertainment app or social media platform. This impact is even more pronounced among younger generations: two-thirds (66%) of Generation Z and more than half (55%) of Millennials have made purchases based on influencer content.

Engagement and Emotional Connection

The survey reveals that Americans feel a range of emotions when they encounter influencer-generated advertising. Nearly half (47%) feel entertained, and 43% are prompted to research the product. Additionally, 24% are likely to share the endorsed product with friends and family, and 23% feel inspired. These responses highlight the power of emotional engagement in driving consumer action.

For brands, this means that incorporating influencer-generated content into marketing strategies can enhance both reach and resonance. Deirdre McFarland, chief marketing and communications officer of NCSolutions, emphasizes this point: "Given the growth of creator-generated content and the quality and size of the audience that these social/entertainment platforms attract, brands have an opportunity to complement their branded marketing campaigns with these influencer-created ads."

Generation Z: Leading the Charge

Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, demonstrates a particularly strong affinity for creator-generated content. The survey found that 37% of Gen Zers appreciate creators sharing personal aspects of their lives, compared to 23% of all other generations. Furthermore, 27% of Gen Zers feel strongly connected to influencers, and 27% believe influencers endorse only top-quality products. This trust and connection make Gen Z a prime target for brands looking to build lasting relationships.

More than one in five Gen Zers trust influencers and their recommendations (21%), and 16% feel represented by creators. These figures are significantly higher than those of older generations, underscoring the unique bond between Gen Z and influencers. For brands, tapping into this connection can lead to increased loyalty and sales.

Key Elements of Effective Content

Understanding what makes creator-generated content effective is essential for brands aiming to engage younger audiences. Humor tops the list, with 50% of Americans citing it as the most appealing attribute of influencer ads. "How-to" videos (40%), music (37%), authenticity (34%), storytelling (33%), and product suggestions (27%) also resonate strongly with viewers.

As McFarland notes, "Knowing the elements that consumers like the most and drive purchase behaviors is vital intel for brands." By incorporating these elements into their influencer partnerships, brands can enhance their creative impact and drive incremental sales.

Economic Impact

The influence of creator-generated content extends across income levels. The NCS survey found that 52% of consumers earning $100,000 annually made a purchase based on influencer content, while 46% of those earning $50,000 to $99,000 and 41% of those with incomes less than $50,000 did the same. This widespread impact highlights the broad appeal of influencer marketing.

Strategic Implications for Brands

To stay relevant and drive growth, brands must recognize the value of timely, creator-generated content. By aligning with the right influencers and incorporating key content elements, brands can create memorable and impactful campaigns. As McFarland concludes, "Pairing your brand with the right creator not only raises the power of creative but also enhances brand connections, allowing advertisers to make lasting impressions with consumers."

Think About This, Gen Z and Millennials are more than just demographics; they are dynamic, influential consumers who respond to authentic, engaging content. Brands that embrace this shift and invest in creator-generated content will not only capture the hearts and wallets of these generations but also pave the way for sustained growth and success in the ever-evolving marketplace.

Millennials' Shift from Restaurants to C-store Foodservice: A Modern Perspective

The food sector is witnessing a significant shift as Millennials continue their exploration for fresh food options in the grocerant niche. This journey of discovery, trial, and migration is challenging the traditional paradigms of legacy chain restaurants. Steven Johnson, the Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®, has been at the forefront of this evolution.

A recent GasBuddy survey revealed that "43 percent of millennials purchase more food from c-stores today than three years ago". In our fast-paced world, where a full-time job can consume almost all waking hours, Millennials are seeking fresh food that is both quick and affordable. They are finding these needs met at C-stores.

The survey further found that:

Approximately 56 percent of Americans purchase meals at gas station c-stores at least once a month, with younger consumers doing so more frequently.

A quarter of those aged 30-44 purchase food five or more times per month.

20 percent of those aged 18-29 purchase food at c-stores three to four times per month.

Three-quarters (75 percent) of respondents believe c-store foodservice has improved in the past five years.

Frank Beard, a convenience store trends analyst at GasBuddy, stated that "Convenience retailers with compelling foodservice programs are a growing threat to quick-service restaurants". People are choosing convenience stores over fast-food locations due to the convenience of an all-in-one stop for fuel and food, and a preference for the taste of the food at c-stores. This trend is further amplified by leading convenience brands like Wawa and QuikTrip rapidly expanding across the country.

Legacy restaurants have reasons to worry. Along with frequent visits to c-stores to purchase meals comes increased dollar spend. The study found that one in four Americans spend $6 to $10 per week on c-store foodservice, with nearly 20 percent of those aged 18-29 spending $10 to $15 per week.

The most-preferred meals at both c-stores and quick-service restaurants include sandwiches or wraps; fresh salad; pizza; burgers and fries; and fried chicken. Beard continued, "Convenience brands are well-positioned to cater to consumers' tastes because they aren't pigeon-holed into one type of cuisine". The study found that younger Americans prefer more variety, particularly with newer menu items like burritos and pizzas.

Speed is a concern, as nearly one third of consumers are only willing to wait five minutes for their meal. When asked what they dislike about fast food establishments, consumers named unhealthy options as their top concern, followed by food quality, restaurant cleanliness, and limited food and drink options.

In the light of recent trends, Foodservice Solutions® offers its 5P’s of Food Marketing to enhance your retail food brand while creating a platform for consumer convenient meal participation, differentiation, and individualization. For more information, you can reach out to them via email.

Fast forward to 2024, the landscape of the food industry continues to evolve. Millennials and Gen Z are leading a movement towards healthy eating amidst the current cost-of-living crisis by scaling back on non-essentials, including streaming services. They prioritize spending on healthier food over streaming services during the cost-of-living crisis. This shift in priorities is reflected in the growing popularity of c-store foodservice, which has seen significant innovation and expansion in recent years. As the landscape continues to change, c-stores are increasingly seen as sites where customers can find value for their meal dollars.

Think about this, the shift of Millennials from restaurants to c-store foodservice is a testament to the changing dynamics of the food sector. As the Grocerant Guru® Steven Johnson suggests, the key to survival in the next generation of retail is embracing both technological advancements and the demand for fresh, accessible food.

Competition for Food Consumers Driving Change

Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® and his team, have been closely observing the battle for the consumer's stomach among restaurants, grocery stores, and convenience stores. The recent Numerator's Consumer Confidence report provides some interesting insights into this ongoing competition.

The report reveals a slight dip in consumer confidence in April, with the score dropping to 56.9 [3]. This reflects a growing concern among consumers about job availability and financial stability. Despite these concerns, the food sector continues to be a battleground for consumer dollars.

Interestingly, consumers are increasingly turning to cost-saving measures. A significant 43.7% are using coupons and discount codes, while 42.9% are opting to cook meals at home. This trend is a clear indication of the growing importance of grocery stores in the food sector.

In fact, recent trends suggest that grocery stores are gaining an edge over restaurants in the food spending market share [4]. This shift has been driven by the pandemic, which has seen consumers increasingly turn to grocery stores for their food needs.

Convenience stores are also making their mark. They're becoming popular alternatives to traditional fast-food restaurants, with consumers seeking quick, on-the-go meals. In 2023, convenience stores were primarily visited for food on the go, with 77% of consumers eating the meal they purchased in their car.

However, the competition is far from over. Restaurants continue to gain market share, with their share nearly 56% in December. Despite higher prices compared to grocery stores, consumers have not significantly shifted their food dollars back to grocery stores and supermarkets.

Think about this, while consumers are feeling less confident about the economy, the battle for the share of stomach continues. Currently, it appears that grocery stores and convenience stores are gaining ground, but restaurants are not far behind. As the Grocerant Guru®, I'll be keeping a close eye on these trends and how they evolve in the future. Stay tuned for more insights!
