Dunkin’ Scores a Hole-in-One with Interactive Food Marketing, Golf Culture, and Gen Z Engagement

The foodservice industry's newest battleground isn't just about what consumers eat or drink—it's about how brands invite consumers to participate, engage, share, and become part of the experience according to Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® based in Tacoma, WA at Foodservice Solutions®.

This week, Dunkin’ demonstrates exactly how modern food marketing is evolving as it launches a multi-layered golf-themed campaign that blends limited-time beverages, collectible merchandise, loyalty rewards, social media engagement, celebrity partnerships, and immersive retail experiences.

From the perspective of the Grocerant Guru®, this is not simply a product launch. It is a masterclass in interactive participatory food marketing.

As one of golf's biggest championship weeks unfolds, Dunkin’ is leveraging the growing popularity of golf among younger consumers while creating multiple touchpoints that encourage customers to interact with the brand both on and off the course.

Rather than relying solely on traditional advertising, Dunkin’ is inviting customers to become active participants in the experience.

The centerpiece of the campaign includes two limited-time golf-inspired beverages:

• Peach "Tee" Dunkin’ Zero, a peach-flavored iced tea energy drink.

• Raspberry "Tee" Lemonade, combining lemonade, iced black tea, and raspberry flavor.

These drinks are more than menu additions—they are conversation starters designed to connect with golf culture while creating social media-worthy moments.

Dunkin’ takes participation even further with its unique MUNCHKINS® Golf Ball Sleeve, pairing donut hole treats with a custom TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf ball. The promotion cleverly blurs the line between foodservice, sports, collectibles, and lifestyle branding.

Today's consumers—particularly younger consumers—are increasingly attracted to experiences that feel personalized, exclusive, and shareable. Dunkin’ recognizes that reality.

The company is also partnering with two-time major champion John Daly, one of golf's most recognizable and entertaining personalities. Daly's larger-than-life persona aligns perfectly with Dunkin's approachable and fun brand identity, creating authentic content opportunities that resonate across social platforms.

But perhaps the most important aspect of this campaign is how many participation points it creates for consumers.

Customers can:

• Try limited-time beverages.

• Collect golf-themed products.

• Earn bonus loyalty rewards.

• Engage with social media content.

• Purchase exclusive co-branded merchandise.

• Visit experiential retail locations.

• Share their experiences online.

That level of engagement transforms customers from buyers into brand advocates.

The exclusive Dunkin’ and TaylorMade merchandise collaboration further extends the brand beyond foodservice. Golf bags, apparel, hats, accessories, and collectibles allow consumers to physically display their relationship with the brand long after a cup of coffee has been consumed.

This strategy mirrors a growing trend the Grocerant Guru® has been tracking for years: consumers increasingly seek brands that fit seamlessly into their lifestyles, hobbies, and passions.

Dunkin’ also understands the growing influence of younger golfers.

Golf participation among Millennials and Gen Z consumers continues to expand, fueled by social media, golf entertainment venues, and a more casual, inclusive image of the sport. By aligning with golf culture in a playful, approachable manner, Dunkin’ positions itself to connect with emerging generations of consumers who value experiences as much as products.

The company's transformation of its Westhampton Beach location into a golf-themed destination featuring a putting green, photo opportunities, and golf-inspired décor further demonstrates the power of experiential retail. Consumers no longer simply visit stores—they visit destinations that create memories and generate content worth sharing.

The loyalty component may be the smartest move of all.

By offering FORE-X (4X) rewards points and additional bonus opportunities through its app and drive-thru channels, Dunkin’ strengthens customer engagement while encouraging digital ordering behavior and repeat visits.

From the Grocerant Guru® perspective, Dunkin’ is proving that successful foodservice marketing today requires much more than advertising. It requires creating ecosystems of participation where products, technology, entertainment, sports, loyalty programs, and social engagement work together to drive consumer excitement.

Golf may be the theme, but engagement is the real product.

Three Reasons the Grocerant Guru® Believes This Campaign Will Drive Success

1.       It Creates Active Participation
Consumers are no longer passive recipients of marketing. Dunkin’ gives customers multiple ways to interact with the brand, increasing emotional connection and loyalty.

2.       It Connects with Younger Consumers Through Lifestyle Marketing
Rather than selling coffee alone, Dunkin’ is connecting with passions, hobbies, experiences, and social sharing opportunities that resonate strongly with Millennials and Gen Z consumers.

3.       It Extends Brand Reach Beyond the Restaurant
Through merchandise, golf partnerships, experiential retail, loyalty rewards, and social media content, Dunkin’ remains visible long after the beverage purchase, creating greater brand relevance and consumer engagement.

Starbucks Ongoing Struggle Compounding Industry Concerns

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol continues to send mixed messages about the company’s direction, leaving employees confused and frustrated as he announces the abrupt elimination of 1,100 corporate jobs this week, along with several hundred unfilled positions according to Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®. This move, which follows his January warning of potential layoffs, raises serious concerns about leadership consistency, branding clarity, and employee morale at the struggling coffee giant.

Niccol’s latest announcement further muddles the company’s stance on remote work. While executives at the vice president level and above are now required to be in offices in Seattle or Toronto at least three days a week, employees at director level or below who were hired remotely will retain that status—yet new hires for similar roles must now be physically based in those cities. This arbitrary, ever-changing policy suggests an organization that lacks a clear vision and leaves employees uncertain about their future work arrangements.

Compounding these concerns is Starbucks’ ongoing struggle to maintain its brand identity amid increasing competition and operational difficulties. The company reported a fourth consecutive quarter of declining same-store sales, with a 4% drop globally in its latest earnings report. Yet, instead of delivering a cohesive strategy to address these challenges, Niccol appears to be doubling down on internal upheaval, cutting jobs and altering reporting structures while failing to provide a compelling plan for recovery.

Despite framing the layoffs as a way to "increase accountability, reduce complexity, and drive better integration," Niccol’s approach so far has only sown discord. Employees are left questioning their job security, their workplace expectations, and even the company’s core mission. If Starbucks truly wants to focus on the experience it creates in its coffeehouses, it must first address the turmoil at its corporate level and regain the trust of its workforce.

Niccol, who was brought in last August from Chipotle to lead a turnaround, has so far delivered instability rather than inspiration. His vague reassurances to affected employees—thanking them for their contributions while eliminating their positions—do little to alleviate the frustration and uncertainty rippling through the company. As Starbucks moves forward, it must decide whether it will continue this chaotic trajectory or finally provide a consistent, transparent strategy that employees and customers alike can believe in.

Starbucks’ Comeback: Spinning Press Releases or Exceeding Expectations?

Brian Niccol’s ambitious plan to revolutionize Starbucks—promising faster service, a focus on the “third place” concept, and improved technology—sounds enticing. However, according to Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® a closer look at the coffee giant’s recent performance raises critical questions about whether these goals are realistic or merely a PR strategy to mask deeper issues. With a 7% global same-store sales decline and suspended fiscal guidance for 2025, Starbucks faces significant hurdles.

Pricing Problems: The Cost of Convenience

Starbucks’ pricing has long been a sticking point. Despite Niccol’s assurances of no price hikes in 2025 and a promise to “simplify the pricing architecture,” the chain’s current pricing remains a barrier for many customers. The average Starbucks drink costs between $4.00 and $5.50, significantly higher than competitors like Dunkin’ and McDonald’s, which offer comparable beverages for as low as $2.50.

In a tightening economy, customers are increasingly trading down. Dunkin’, for instance, reported a 12% increase in coffee sales in 2024, largely attributed to its “Refill Rewards” program and consistent pricing. Meanwhile, Dutch Bros. Coffee, known for its affordable drinks and speedy drive-thru service, has expanded aggressively, growing by over 20% in store count last year. Tim Hortons, another competitor, is luring budget-conscious consumers with meal bundles combining coffee and breakfast items for under $5.

Service Challenges: The 30-Second Promise

Niccol’s assertion that Starbucks customers will receive a brewed cup of coffee in under 30 seconds is optimistic at best. Industry insiders highlight systemic inefficiencies in Starbucks’ operations, including long wait times for handcrafted beverages. While Starbucks tout’s advancements in mobile ordering and dedicated pickup areas, customers often report discrepancies between estimated and actual wait times.

In contrast, Dutch Bros. consistently delivers drinks in under two minutes through its highly efficient, simplified menu and well-trained baristas. Similarly, McDonald’s has leveraged its established drive-thru infrastructure to provide coffee with minimal wait times, capturing former Starbucks customers seeking speed and convenience.

Technology: A Double-Edged Sword

Starbucks’ investment in technology, including enhanced mobile ordering and wait time optimization, is commendable. However, over-reliance on technology can alienate customers seeking human interaction. The return to handwritten names on cups—a nod to personalization—is a step in the right direction, but it may not be enough to counteract the perceived impersonal nature of its tech-heavy model.

Tim Hortons, by contrast, has successfully blended technology and personalization. Its app not only streamlines ordering but also incorporates gamification elements like “Tims Rewards,” encouraging repeat visits while maintaining a personal touch at the counter. Dunkin’s loyalty program also strikes a balance, offering targeted promotions that feel personal without overcomplicating the experience.

Spinning PR or Delivering Results?

Starbucks’ press releases under Brian Niccol emphasize bold goals, but the gap between promises and execution remains wide. For example, Niccol’s focus on simplifying the menu and improving drink consistency mirrors previous initiatives that failed to yield long-term gains. Starbucks’ reliance on buzzworthy announcements, such as the “Starbucks for Life” rewards game, often generates short-term excitement but does little to address core operational challenges.

Competitors Gaining Ground

1.       Dutch Bros. Coffee: Known for its speed and customer-centric culture, Dutch Bros. is rapidly expanding, with a 25% increase in customer visits reported in 2024.

2.       Dunkin’: Affordable pricing and a robust loyalty program have made Dunkin’ a favorite among former Starbucks regulars.

3.       Tim Hortons: Combining value-driven meal bundles with technological innovation, Tim Hortons is steadily capturing market share in North America.

Think About This

Starbucks’ comeback story, as spun by Brian Niccol, faces significant challenges. From high prices to lagging service times and technology that risks alienating customers, the chain must address its core issues rather than relying on flashy PR campaigns. As competitors like Dutch Bros., Dunkin’, and Tim Hortons continue to innovate and attract disillusioned Starbucks customers, the question remains: can Starbucks truly deliver on its promises, or will it remain better at crafting press releases than meeting consumer expectations?

Can Burger King’s Digitization Come Soon Enough

Global restaurant brands are working as hard and fast as they can to digitalize every aspect of there brand.  In the case of a global behemoth Burger King, Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® asks, “How long can you last being second? When the consumer moved deeper into hand held food, hand held marketing, how long will it take Burger King to drive global brand relevance with digital branded messaging?”

The simple fact of the mater is digitization of the Burger King brand is taking to long.   There is no doubt that there will be more digitization, however how relevant will it be?  Overall, the food industry is taking its time to adopt AI and digitize as many different areas as possible. Roughly half of the food industry currently utilizes AI in some way, and while many industry insiders envision a massive digitization product that prompts a full overhaul of the industry, it is better practice to use AI and machine learning to solve specific problems bit by bit. In 2023 will likely see an even bigger digitization push in the food industry with branded messaging leading the way.

We will see every thing from hourly specials, to weekly deals, even branded crisis managers will be utilizing A. So, at Burger King they have elected to focus on digital-only offers for loyal guests versus blanket discounts. It that the right approach?  Maybe more hand held than mass media? Do you think so?

Now, KFC recenlty announced a limited time $5 deal on its chicken pot pies, for instance. According to a spokesperson, this is nearly a dollar cheaper than the traditional price of the item. Meanwhile, Sonic has introduced a new Under $2 Craves menu through March 26 and Popeyes has relaunched its ghost pepper wings and is offering six for $5 for a limited time.

Of course, promos are always big this time of year, as January and February tend to be slower business months for restaurants and as consumers tighten up their spending habits following the holidays.

“The holiday season can be tough on everyone’s wallets, and we’re so excited to bring back ghost pepper wings at an incredible value that can’t be beat,” Popeyes president Sami Siddiqui said in a statement.

This year, however, is likely to be a bit different. There are still promotions aplenty, no doubt, but there is much more focus on digital-only deals, both to encourage people to join loyalty programs and to collect their data. Digital orders tend to generate higher checks and better margins, after all.

Now, consider Popeyes, for example. In addition to the above promotion, the chain is also offering wings for $6 or 12 wings for $12 for delivery orders made through its app or website. Subway is currently running a buy-one-get-one 50% off Footlong promotion via app and web orders, while Burger King is offering a free Whopper, Croissan’wich or original chicken sandwich on guests’ first digital order through its app or website.

Then Wendy’s is currently running an “app-exclusive offer” that includes $3 off of any order $15 or more, as well as $2 off on a breakfast combo ordered in the app. Jack in the Box is promoting two tacos for 99 cents for digital orders only. And Chipotle’s new lineup of Lifestyle Bowls are available exclusively through the chain’s digital channels.

What’s also different this year is the deals are a little less aggressive as operators continue to manage extraordinarily high inflation costs. This trend has been in play throughout the past couple of quarters, as several restaurant executives have touted value propositions over deep discounting to maintain traffic while balancing higher menu prices.

As an example, Wingstop CEO Michael Skipworth recently said, “When we lean into value, we don’t really discount as a brand … so we’re retaining those indulgent occasions, but then presenting the consumer with value, which can be a price point, the cook-to-order element, the craft and in the attention to detail that goes into our ranch that’s made from scratch every day. All of those elements contribute to consumers’ perception of value.”

Olive Garden is also good example here, recently running its Never Ending Pasta Bowl promotion, but priced $3 higher than its most recent run in 2019. The promotion exceeded expectations and drove positive traffic with little media support, according to executives on parent company Darden Restaurants’ Q2 call last month.

Then there is,” Domino’s CEO Russell Weiner said during the company’s Q3 earnings call they are going a different way.  Domino’s has also taken this approach, inching up the price on its carryout offer from $5.99 to $6.99 in an effort to protect operator margins.  Weiner continued, “Our research indicates we can do (this) and still remain a large relative value. That’s our role within this inflationary environment is to be a strong relative value for our customers.

Then this conundrum, Chili’s has reined in its value menu mix as it works to “right size” its promotional offers. The result has been a slight decrease in traffic, but an uptick on profitability, Brinker CEO Kevin Hochman noted during the company’s most recent earnings call.

As operators continue to find creative ways to achieve such profitability without taking too much pricing, we’re likely to see a continued evolution of promotions in the space to kick off the new year and beyond. That includes a sharper focus on digital promotions without heavy discounting. Bloomin’ Brands CEO David Deno recently summed up the benefits of this approach on his company’s Q3 earnings call.

“You're going to see us in a more digital environment talking about the value we offer every day. You won't see a lot of discounting from us,” he said. “We think we've got our menu prices in line, we think we've got some great offers in line. We understand the digital marketing piece, we can flex it up and down, and we're really pleased with the returns that we're seeing.”
