Does Alcohol Make Adults Act Like Kids

It just might be the case that Gen Z and Millennials are not as different as their parents.  Take of instance the new trend in adult beverage flavors. Much like their parents both Gen Z and Millennials are looking back to their childhood favorite flavors and rekindling them in alcohol and nonalcoholic beverages.

Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® stated, “My job is simply fun. Reading, learning, and sharing information on consumers food twist and turns runs the gamut from unbelievable to the most logical twist and or evolution within a retail channel or branded product line.”

Today our team is sharing some new research and analysis from Datassential; who found that Sunny D, Lucky Charms and chocolate Easter bunnies are all providing inspiration for adult beverages in the 2023 spring and summer seasons. Oh yeah this is some of the fun.

Now according to Datassential's recent webinar, "2023 Adult Beverage Trends."  Beverage retailers are looking to tap into millennial and older Gen Z nostalgia, beverage companies are seeking to provide a familiar experience reminiscent of childhood but suitable for adult tastes. Here is a report of the webinar:

“Hosts Colleen McClellan, vice president of customer experience; Kyle Chamberlin, associate director of customer experience; and Kelly Dykhuizen, senior director of customer experience, covered a wide range of alcoholic beverages and cocktails with a focus on recapturing the feel of childhood experiences with something appropriate for a grown-up palate.

Simultaneously, an uptick on nonalcoholic offerings shows how the changing patterns in drinking behavior, especially among the youngest legal cohort, is causing traditional brewers and winemakers to expand their offerings to nondrinkers.

Both trends can be seen in home sales and restaurant offerings. For instance, the Chocolate Club in London introduced a booze-filled chocolate bunny for Easter while The City Tap in Boston created a Lucky Charms martini, a pistachio-based drink garnished with the breakfast cereal staple. For the at-home market, Sunny D entered into the hard seltzer space with a vodka-infused 12-ounce can.

Adult Nonalcoholic Options

In the meantime, according to Chamberlin, the nonalcoholic beer space has seen an uptick in activity after years of flat or even declining growth. But changes in drinking preferences after the pandemic seem to have sparked a resurgence.

"Consumers are … seeing high ABV as an efficient way to drink," Chamberlin said. "If they're going to spend up for craft, they want it to get the bang for their buck out of the ABV. And I think increasingly, we're seeing a kind of bifurcation where people are going for no alcohol at all … or they're going all the way up to the eight, nine [or] 10 percent imperial IPAs."

McClellan pointed out that while brewing companies have long worked in the nonalcoholic space, it's only more recently that wines and spirits have started to more actively produce low or no-ABV offerings at capacity. This includes some surprisingly traditional brands and companies, such as Veuve du Verne from France and Starla.

In the meantime, companies like Mixoloshe offer nonalcoholic cocktail options, like blueberry gin and tonics, or nonalcoholic mixers and bases, such as the no-ABV limoncello from Paulini.

Wine & Cocktails

Which isn't to say that the adult beverage industry has decided to teetotal for the entire spring and summer seasons. Fruit-based and botanical offerings are being or have been launched for customers interested in lighter flavors in warmer weather. Chamberlin pointed to brands like Seagram's Escapes, which brought in flavors like leche to tap into a younger market while also elevating what malt beverages can offer.

To add to that trend, McClellan noted that many wines have returned to marketing themselves with terms like "fruity" or "crisp." She attributes these product trends to consumers themselves becoming more adventurous in their palates or simply not having the same negative connotations with certain types of drinks.

"Seventy-two percent of consumers are interested in a fruit wine, like blackberry wine," she said. "Our drinkers today are young enough and new enough to the category that they don't have [a] preconceived notion of what wine needs to be or the romance of bottle opening."

Combine Snacks, Fresh Food, Beverages and more GoPuff Growth is Grocerant Great

Restaurant chains are closing stores, grocers are blaming the cost of labor for store closures, convenience stores are reshuffling their fresh food line-up to focus on daypart customers customer visit shifts; all the while Gopuff is adding more fulfillment centers garnering a larger share of stomach from all of the above.

According to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® “it is at the intersection of technology, food discovery, and American’s never-ending desire for instant gratification that has help propel great growth at Gopuff.”

While Americans Consumers have a deep affection for breakfast, with three in five Americans (62 percent) saying breakfast is their favorite meal of the day and more than half (56 percent) saying they love breakfast food more now than they did a year ago. That meal is now most often consumed at home.

Thus, opening the door for Gopuff to extend its delivery daypart options for snacks, fresh food, beverages, and incremental grocerant niche related products as Gopuff knows that:

1.       Recent Grocerant ScoreCards found 82.3% of consumers don’t know what’s for dinner at Noon, and 61.1 don’t know what’ s for dinner at 4PM %.

2.       83.1% all dinners have at least 1 grocerant niche Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat meal component and 68.4% have two meal components.

3.       When asked if they wanted to cook dinner from scratch or assemble dinner from fresh meal components 90.4 % of Gen Z chose assemble from Fresh Prepared Meal Components and Millennials 82.7% chose meal components.

4.       Seventy-three percent of retail prepared food purchases are taken to go

5.       Prepared food purchases are frequently a planned purchase among 59% of shoppers, while 41% of shoppers said they buy prepared foods on impulse. Dinner has the highest amount of prepared food buys with 79% of respondents making purchases for that meal, while lunch comes in at 77% and breakfast at 62%.

6.       55% of consumers would like to try autonomous EV delivery

Now eight years after launching, Gopuff continues to grow not only in geographical reach but in product reach as well. Recently, Gopuff co-founder and co-CEO Yakir Gola stated that Gopuff is adding 40 or 50 micro-fulfillment centers every month while entering new categories as well.

When a student at Drexel University, Gola and co-founder Rafael Ilishayev launched the startup as a way to get late-night snacks without running to a convenience store. The company began delivering those goods, along with hookahs and tobacco products.

While in school other companies entering the "instant needs" space — a term Gopuff coined — Gola said he believes Gopuff "is in a category of one." Now the company operates in more than 1,000 cities and carries more than 4,000 items, and its network includes brick-and-mortar stores, which double as warehouses. Its valuation reached $15 billion in July.  We ask, how many locations has your company opened during the last eight year?

So, in late 2020, Gopuff entered into a definitive agreement to acquire BevMo! for $350 million, and this past June it acquired Liquor Barn, a chain of beer, wine and liquor stores based in Louisville, Ky., from private equity firm Blue Equity. Restaurants Rebound with Rebranded Booze

Suggestive up-selling has always been a part of the Restaurant sector marketers, marketing toolkit.  In 2021, up-selling branded alcoholic beverages the ilk of TGI Fridays Orange Dream, Mudslide, or Long Island Iced Tea will drive branded relevance while giving the consumer just what they are asking for according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.

According to a recent data analysis by Ibotta, the leading cash-back app helping people save money with their everyday purchases, there seems to be a lot of truth to this! If you have not checked Ibotta out I suggest you do.

Ibotta found, spirits and hard liquor are up the most with a 33% increase during the first part of the pandemic when compared with 2019 sales, followed by wine at a 12% increase. Surprisingly, beer sales overall are down, with a few exceptions! Here is what we know about pandemic alcohol sales based on data from Ibotta:

So, mix a drink, invent a drink, brand a local drink with Brandy, Tequila, Whiskey, Vodka, Gin or Rum and toast the new year.

Will an Autonomous Store Replace Grocery Stores, Restaurants, and C-Stores?

Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® At Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® team believes the migration from inside dining at restaurants, the 40 minute grocery shopping trip, and the quick stop at the C-store on the way home will within 7 years be replaced by branded autonomous retail stores selling meals and meal solutions.
After reading an article by Isabelle Gustfason about an Artificial intelligence (AI) technology company AiFi that had announced that it’s on track to deploy 330 new and retrofitted autonomous stores by the end of 2021, Johnson and his team began to speculate that a smaller footprint, fewer emplyees, and fresh food fast how could that not work in the ever expanding world of Grocerant niche Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat fresh prepared food.

She wrote “Today, AiFi’s OASIS, the Orchestrated Autonomous Store Infrastructure and Services, is already powering 10 futuristic stores in a variety of sizes in Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, and San Antonio in the U.S., in Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Paris, and Poznan in Europe and in the city of Shanghai in Asia.
In addition to the publicly known partnerships with Albert Heijn, Carrefour, Å»abka, and Loop Neighborhood, AiFi is also actively deploying autonomous stores with several prominent companies listed among the top 10 grocery retailers — both nationally and internationally.
The 330 AiFi OASIS-based autonomous stores range from 800-square-foot convenience stores and travel shops to 10,000-square-foot grocery stores. They are located primarily in the U.S. and Europe, with additional stores coming to Australia, Asia and South America.
“We are going to see explosive growth in autonomous stores. With the onset of COVID-19, the need is even more urgent for a contactless and autonomous retail store where you can shop and feel safe in a physical environment,” said Steve Gu, CEO and co-founder, AiFi. “The 10 deployed stores are operational or in advanced stages of testing. These stores have proven to be stable, accurate and popular among shoppers who love the lightning speed and fluid retail experience.”

For new stores being deployed, AiFi has developed three tiers of its OASIS Autonomous Store Platform: AiFi Enterprise, AiFi Business and AiFi Lite. The AiFi Enterprise allows for a customizable solution with a superior checkout-free experience including flexible payment methods, an advanced shopping journey design, and value-added operational tools for smart inventory management. All three tiers can provide a return on investment in less than one year, as well as fast and easy deployment.
“The whole world is moving towards being autonomous,” said Gu. “AiFi is proud to be working with the most renowned retail brands in the world to bring the best user experience to shoppers for the new era of autonomous shopping.” We ask are you looking a customer ahead?
