Church’s Texas Chicken Scores a Golazo with Mix-and-Match Meal Bundling That Drives Customer Migration

For more than three decades, the Grocerant Guru® has tracked, identified, quantified, and qualified the power of Mix-and-Match Meal Bundling as one of the most effective tools for increasing customer frequency, transaction size, and brand migration. Today, what was once viewed as a simple family meal deal has evolved into one of the most powerful consumer engagement platforms in foodservice.

Church's Texas Chicken's new Golazo Meal is a textbook example of how successful brands are leveraging food, occasion-based marketing, collectibles, and social engagement to create consumer value beyond price.

The Golazo Meal, priced at $39.99, includes 20 pieces of legs and thighs or tenders, four large sides, 10 Honey-Butter Biscuits, and a collectible soccer ball representing the USA, Brazil, Argentina, or Mexico. Combined with soccer-themed packaging and community-focused activation events, Church's is doing much more than selling chicken—it is selling an experience.

Why This Matters in 2026

Consumers increasingly purchase meals based on occasion, convenience, portability, and perceived value rather than traditional restaurant channels. The consumer thinks "meal," "mini-meal," "snack," or "occasion." They no longer think in terms of fast food, convenience store, grocery deli, or restaurant categories.

This phenomenon, which the Grocerant Guru® has long described as CHANNEL BLURRING, continues to reshape foodservice.

According to industry research between 2020 and 2026:

·       Consumers increasingly seek bundled meal solutions that simplify group dining.

·       Family meal occasions remain one of the fastest-growing foodservice segments.

·       Sports-viewing occasions continue to drive incremental food purchases.

·       Value perception increasingly comes from quantity, customization, convenience, and experiential rewards rather than price alone.

·       Collectible merchandise and limited-time offers generate higher engagement among younger consumers.

The Golazo Meal intersects all five trends.

Three Mix-and-Match Meal Bundle Success Stories

1. Church's Texas Chicken Golazo Meal

Why it works:

Reason #1: Occasion-Based Consumption

Consumers are not simply buying chicken. They are buying a ready-made solution for soccer watch parties, family gatherings, and group celebrations.

Reason #2: Collectability Creates Repeat Visits

The four different soccer balls encourage multiple purchases throughout the promotion period. Consumers seeking all four collectibles create incremental traffic and increased purchase frequency.

2. Little Caesars NFL and Sports-Themed Bundles (2024-2026)

Little Caesars has consistently paired pizza bundles with major sporting events and entertainment occasions.

Why it works:

Reason #1: Group Consumption

Pizza naturally serves multiple people and simplifies decision-making for group occasions.

Reason #2: High Perceived Value

Consumers view bundled pizzas, sides, and promotional offers as a complete solution that reduces meal-planning friction.

3. Costco Food Court and Prepared Meal Bundles

Costco continues to expand its prepared meal offerings that combine entrees, sides, and family-sized portions.

Why it works:

Reason #1: Convenience

Consumers can solve dinner for an entire family with one purchase.

Reason #2: Trusted Value Proposition

The combination of quality, quantity, and pricing creates a compelling value equation that drives repeat purchasing.

4. Kroger, Albertsons, and Grocery Service Deli Meal Bundles

Since 2020, supermarkets have expanded Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat meal bundles that combine proteins, sides, desserts, and beverages.

Why it works:

Reason #1: Customization

Consumers can mix components to match household preferences.

Reason #2: Time Savings

The bundles eliminate planning, shopping, and preparation while maintaining a home-style meal experience.

The Grocerant Guru® Was Early to the Trend

Long before meal bundles became standard practice, the Grocerant Guru® identified Mix-and-Match Meal Bundling as a critical growth driver capable of increasing:

·       Transaction size

·       Customer frequency

·       Customer retention

·       Foodservice migration

·       Cross-category purchasing

More than 30 years ago, the Grocerant Guru® observed that consumers preferred building personalized meals from multiple components rather than purchasing rigid menu combinations.

Today that insight is visible everywhere—from convenience stores and supermarkets to quick-service restaurants and club stores.

What many industry observers once dismissed as simple "combo meals" have evolved into sophisticated meal solution platforms that drive consumer engagement across every foodservice segment.

Church's Understands the New Value Equation

The Golazo Meal succeeds because it combines:

·       Food

·       Entertainment

·       Collectability

·       Community engagement

·       Cultural relevance

Consumers increasingly reward brands that create memorable experiences around food rather than simply discounting products.

By aligning with the world's most popular sport and packaging the promotion around sharing occasions, Church's Texas Chicken is positioning itself squarely within one of the strongest growth trends in foodservice.

The promotion also demonstrates that successful meal bundles are no longer about feeding consumers; they are about helping consumers create moments.

That distinction is increasingly important as consumers continue migrating toward brands that deliver convenience, value, social connection, and experience simultaneously.

Three Grocerant Guru® Insights

Insight #1

The future belongs to brands that bundle occasions, not just food. Consumers buy solutions for events, gatherings, and experiences rather than individual menu items.

Insight #2

Collectible merchandise tied to meal bundles will continue driving repeat visits among younger consumers who value social sharing, exclusivity, and participation.

Insight #3

As CHANNEL BLUR accelerates, winning foodservice operators will increasingly compete against every retailer selling prepared food—not simply direct restaurant competitors. The consumer's question is no longer "Where should I eat?" but "Who offers the best meal solution for this occasion?"

The Future of Autonomous Retail: Smart Stores Reshape the Intersection of Food and Convenience

The future of retail is here, and it doesn’t have a cashier according to Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®. Autonomous retail stores, like VenHub’s new Smart Store at Los Angeles Union Station, are redefining convenience, efficiency, and the customer experience. What began as a futuristic idea born in the labs of Amazon Go and a handful of tech startups is now accelerating into mainstream adoption across the U.S. and beyond.

A Brief History: From Vending to Vision-Driven Retail

The autonomous retail journey began decades ago with vending machines — the first true “unmanned” retail outlets. Those machines sold snacks and sodas, but they hinted at something bigger: consumer comfort with frictionless, staff-free purchasing. Fast forward to 2016, when Amazon Go opened its first cashierless convenience store, proving that computer vision, AI, and mobile integration could eliminate lines and checkout counters entirely.

Today, companies like VenHub, AiFi, Grabango, and Zippin are expanding the ecosystem, enabling 24/7 access to food and essentials in spaces once thought too small, too remote, or too transient to justify traditional retail. VenHub’s rapid-install Smart Store at Union Station — serving 60,000+ daily passengers with more than 400 SKUs — underscores how automation and modular design can thrive even in the busiest environments.

8 Out-of-the-Box Locations Where Autonomous Retail Can Thrive

Autonomous stores are not just the future of convenience — they are the future of location strategy. Here are eight unconventional but high-potential venues:

1.       Hospital Campuses – 24/7 medical environments need food, hygiene, and comfort items at all hours. Staff, visitors, and patients all benefit from round-the-clock access.

2.       Residential High-Rise Lobbies – Smart Stores bring grocery and meal solutions directly to residents without requiring full grocery footprints.

3.       Highway Rest Stops – Ideal for travelers at off-hours, these outlets reduce labor costs and improve consistency.

4.       Corporate Campuses – Staffed cafeterias are costly; autonomous stores can replace or complement them with fresh, ready-to-eat options.

5.       University Dorm Clusters – Gen Z consumers expect mobile-first convenience; smart micro-markets fit perfectly.

6.       Sports & Entertainment Venues – During major events, autonomous units can handle crowd surges without staffing crises.

7.       Military Bases and Remote Work Sites – Secure, modular, and scalable autonomous units can operate where traditional logistics fall short.

8.       Cruise Ports and Airports – High security, high volume, and irregular hours make them prime for frictionless, unattended operations.

Each location highlights the scalability and adaptability of autonomous retail — plug, play, and sell.

5 Reasons Why Autonomous Retail Works

1.       Labor Efficiency – Automation reduces dependency on staffing during labor shortages and inflationary wage cycles.

2.       24/7 Accessibility – Always open, always stocked — ideal for today’s on-demand culture.

3.       Precision Data & Inventory Control – Real-time analytics eliminate waste and improve product availability.

4.       Speed of Deployment – VenHub’s Union Station store was delivered and operational in days, not months — a new industry benchmark.

5.       Consumer Trust in Technology – Mobile payments, facial recognition, and QR access are now everyday behaviors. Consumers are ready.

Insights from the Grocerant Guru®: The Evolving Face of Food Retail

1.       Foodservice is No Longer Bound by Walls – The grocerant model — blending restaurant quality with grocery convenience — aligns perfectly with autonomous retail. The next generation of outlets will offer Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat meals, not just snacks.

2.       Micro-Markets Meet Mobility – The rise of households of one or two means convenience is king. Mobile-first, small-format retail serves these customers better than big-box grocery ever could.

3.       Brand Expansion Through Footprint Flexibility – Expect national food brands to use autonomous modules to extend their presence — from gas stations to gym lobbies — with minimal capital investment.

4.       Experience Without Human Friction – Consumers want speed, safety, and satisfaction. Autonomous outlets deliver all three — redefining how food, retail, and technology converge in public spaces.

Think About This: The Convergence of Convenience and Connectivity

Autonomous retail is not a replacement for human service; it’s an evolution of consumer demand. As brands face labor volatility, rising costs, and shifting mobility patterns, autonomous stores like VenHub’s Smart Store model offer scalability and security without sacrificing convenience.

By 2030, experts predict autonomous formats could account for up to 15% of all convenience transactions in urban markets. Whether in a hospital corridor, a transit hub, or a corporate park, the autonomous revolution will continue to deliver what the Grocerant Guru® calls “Foodservice Anywhere.”

The future isn’t just contactless — it’s convenient, connected, and continuous.

Gen Z Why Cook Dinner

The Grocerant niche trend is you friend if you want to sell fresh food to Gen Z or Millennials according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®. The most recent Grocerant ScoreCards conducted by the team at Foodservice Solutions® reveled that when asked if they wanted to cook dinner from scratch or assemble dinner from fresh meal components 91.1 % of Gen Z chose assemble from Fresh Prepared Meal Components and Millennials 83.6 chose assemble meal components.

Do you want to cook dinner from scratch? If the answer is no then there is a very good chance you are looking for fresh prepared multi-flavor, multi-ethnic Grocerant Ready-2-Eat or Heat-N-Eat meal components.

Heat-N-Eat and Ready-2- Eat fresh prepared food with portability is driving retail food success across all retail platforms in 2020 according to the team at Foodservice Solutions®.

Where are you shopping for you food today, is not the same place your mother was, nor is the meal prepared the same way. As long as multi-generational family's gather for meals together, the demand for more divergent flavors will continue to permeate.

Today grocerant mix and match bundled meal component offerings has become a platform empowering increased family integration, understanding, and acceptance in less time without a required cook from scratch skill set.

In the 1940's cooking from scratch was the normal. The average home cooked meal took 150 minutes to prepare. Everyone sat down at the table and enjoyed it or not but they all ate the same thing.

Today's "home cooked meal" takes on average less than 30 minutes to prepared. In most cases at least two different entrées are served. The average time spent inside a McDonalds in the 2,000 was 11 minutes. Today 65+ percent of all McDonald's food is sold via the drive-thru. U.S. fast-food chains are increasingly remodeling restaurants in an effort to garner additional drive-thru customers inside and increase sales, simple because the drive-thru can't hold all the cars.

The simple fat is consumers want easy to prepare/ assemble meals. Today The grocerant niche continues to grow with companies like Central Market, Whole Foods, Wegmans, and 7-Eleven entering the fresh prepared better for you space. Meal time is now becoming a time of convenient meal participation, with differentiation and individualization for the entire family. Safeway with its lifestyle stores are heading in the right direction however the stores are so large consumers are forced to spend more time in them than they want.

Battle for Share of Stomach

More often than not the multi-generational family today is multi-ethnic as well. Creating a demand for more varied flavors and additional cooking skill set that is simply not there. Grocery stores, Convenience Stores, Restaurants and Chain Drug Stores are all selling ready-2-eat and heat-N-eat fresh prepared food. Is your focus family dinning? Are you selling meals or meal components for Take-Out, delivery or Take-Away?

Lacking the skill set to prepared fresh prepared multi-ethnic meal components at home coupled with the time it takes to prepared a home cooked meal it is clear the buying habits of consumers will continue to evolve.

Bundling mix and match meal components into a meal is one key driver within the grocerant niche. Given that most American family are comprised of multi-cultural background. The fight for within the retail food space for share of stomach will only intensify.

Supermarkets and grocery stores are expected to sell complete lines of Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat fresh prepared food much of it will be multi-ethnic food. That places higher expectations on grocers than restaurants or a company like Walgreens. Walgreens might just be in the perfect spot to expand fresh prepared food offerings capturing customers from both restaurants and supermarkets.
