Event Marketing Still Matters: Why Valentine’s Day Proves Timely Food Messaging Wins

In a persistently challenging macroeconomic climate, Valentine’s Day once again proves that event marketing—when done with relevance and restraint—still moves wallets and behavior. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Prosper Insights & Analytics, Valentine’s Day spending is projected to hit a record $29.1 billion, eclipsing last year’s $27.5 billion. Even more telling: shoppers plan to spend $199.78 on average, the highest figure ever recorded for the holiday.

From the Grocerant Guru® vantage point, this isn’t irrational exuberance—it’s purpose-driven spending. More than half of consumers (55%) plan to celebrate, and those who do are expanding the definition of “Valentine.” Beyond romantic partners ($14.5 billion in spend), consumers are buying for kids, parents, siblings ($4.5 billion), friends, co-workers, and even pets. That expansion alone reinforces why timely, inclusive food marketing messaging matters more than ever.

Food plays a starring role. Candy remains the most purchased Valentine’s gift (56%), followed by flowers (41%), greeting cards (41%), and notably, an evening out (39%), which is expected to drive $6.3 billion in spending. Translation: consumers may be value-conscious, but they are still experience-hungry, and foodservice, grocery, and convenience retail are uniquely positioned to capture that demand.

Why Valentine’s Day Is a Masterclass in Event Marketing

Valentine’s Day works because it combines emotional permission with time-bound urgency. Shoppers don’t need to be convinced whether to spend—only where and how. The data confirms it:

·       Jewelry leads spending at $7 billion, but food-driven categories—candy, dining out, flowers, and self-care treats—collectively dominate consumer participation.

·       31% of non-celebrators still mark the occasion, often through self-indulgence or social gatherings.

·       Online remains the top shopping destination (38%), yet physical retail formats—department stores, discount stores, specialty stores—still command the majority of trips, reinforcing the power of in-store merchandising and food-led displays.

Event marketing isn’t about hype; it’s about contextual relevance. Valentine’s Day provides that context in spades.

Fact-Filled Food Offerings That Win on Valentine’s Day

Fact Food / Fast-Casual Restaurants

1.       Heart-Shaped or Limited-Time Menu Items
Pizza and bakery-driven brands routinely roll out heart-shaped pizzas or desserts, driving incremental visits through novelty and social sharing while leveraging existing SKUs.

2.       Couples Bundles or “Dinner for Two” Deals
Fixed-price bundles simplify decision-making and directly align with the $6.3 billion “evening out” spend category highlighted by NRF.

Convenience Stores (C-Stores)

1.       Premium Candy & Chocolate Endcaps
With 56% of consumers buying candy, Valentine-themed endcaps featuring premium chocolates and seasonal packaging outperform standard assortments.

2.       Single-Serve Treat + Beverage Combos
Bundled offers (energy drink + chocolate, wine alternative + candy) appeal to last-minute shoppers and self-gifters, a growing Valentine’s segment.

Grocery Retail

1.       Meal Solutions for Two
Ready-to-cook steak, seafood, or pasta kits paired with wine and dessert allow grocers to capture “stay-in” diners trading down from restaurants without sacrificing experience.

2.       Floral + Dessert Cross-Merchandising
With flowers ($3.1 billion) and candy leading gift categories, adjacency merchandising drives larger baskets and emotional impulse buys.

Full-Service Restaurants

1.       Prix-Fixe Valentine’s Menus
Limited-time, multi-course menus anchor perceived value and help operators forecast demand during one of the year’s highest-intent dining occasions.

2.       Extended Valentine’s Windows
Restaurants that stretch celebrations across multiple days or weeks reduce operational strain and capture consumers avoiding peak-night crowds.

Three Insights from the Grocerant Guru® on the Power of Timely Food Marketing

1.       Emotion Beats Economics—Every Time
Even amid inflation pressure, consumers will spend when messaging aligns with relationships, rituals, and self-reward. Valentine’s Day proves emotional ROI still trumps price sensitivity.

2.       Inclusion Expands the Market
The shift toward gifting friends, family, and pets isn’t a footnote—it’s a growth strategy. Brands that market beyond “romance only” unlock incremental occasions and spend.

3.       Timing Is a Competitive Advantage
Event marketing works because it is finite. Scarcity, seasonality, and relevance create urgency that everyday messaging cannot. Miss the moment, and the dollars move elsewhere.

Think About This: Valentine’s Day isn’t just a holiday—it’s a case study. When food retailers and restaurants align product, messaging, and timing around a shared cultural moment, event marketing doesn’t just resonate—it delivers record-breaking results.

Grocerant Ready-2-Eat or Heat-N-Eat Food: The Perfect Valentine’s Day Solution

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and whether you’re planning a romantic dinner at home or a cozy evening with your loved one, the last thing you want to do is spend hours in the kitchen. Enter the world of grocerant — a delightful fusion of grocery store and restaurant that offers freshly prepared, ready-to-eat, or heat-n-eat foods right within a store, meals from restaurants, convenience store meal bundles or ordering online meals and meal components that can be mix & matched as the perfect family meal according to Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.

A grocerant is more than just a convenient food counter tucked away in the corner of a supermarket. It’s a culinary haven where you can find everything from gourmet sandwiches to custom-made sushi rolls. Here’s what makes grocerants so appealing:

1.       Fresh and Customizable Meals: Grocerants provide a wide range of options, catering to various tastes and dietary preferences. Whether you’re craving Italian, Mexican, or American cuisine, you’ll find it all under one roof. Plus, you can customize your meal to perfection.

2.       Ready-to-Eat Goodness: Imagine picking up a delicious rotisserie chicken, a fresh salad, or a mouthwatering pizza without any cooking hassle. Grocerants offer these ready-to-eat delights, perfect for a stress-free Valentine’s Day dinner.

3.       Heat-N-Eat Convenience: Don’t feel like cooking? No problem! Grab a heat-n-eat lasagna, gourmet mac ‘n’ cheese, or a comforting bowl of soup. Pop it in the oven, and voilà! A cozy meal for two awaits.

4.       Date Night Made Easy: With sit-down dining options available, the grocerant becomes a destination for couples seeking a relaxed evening. Picture sharing a plate of sushi or savoring a slice of freshly baked bread together.

Hy-Vee’s Grocerant Strategy

One standout example is Hy-Vee, a Midwest-based grocery chain that has embraced the grocerant concept wholeheartedly. They’ve redoubled their commitment to prepared foods, offering both full-service Market Grille restaurants and limited-service Market Grille Expresses. These in-store dining spots cater to the growing trend of people eating out more frequently.

But Hy-Vee doesn’t stop there. They’ve also introduced grab-and-go programs like the Sweet Shoppe, Hibachi Asian Grill, juice and smoothie island, made-to-order Cocina Mexicana, and the Hickory House Comfort Foods area. This year, they’re adding Dia Pida Italian Street Food and Long Island Deli to the mix. Their goal? To be the best at providing quality meals that are fresh, customized, and convenient for their customers.

Why Grocerants Matter

Foodservice is booming, growing over 50 percent faster than the traditional supermarket business. Grocerants recognize this trend and aim to become consumers’ total food solution. By offering both dine-in experiences and grab-and-go options, they capture every food dollar — whether customers are cooking at home, eating on the go, or dining out.

So, this Valentine’s Day, consider a grocerant feast. Pick up a heartwarming lasagna, a decadent dessert, or a bottle of wine. Spend less time in the kitchen and more time creating memories with your special someone. Cheers to love, convenience, and deliciousness!

The Fresh Market Lowers Customer Acquisition Cost with Technology

What is freshness? How do your consumers know that the meal they buy from you is fresh other than searching the package looking for the date made or time cooked? So, we ask. What’s more relevant than livestream meal prep or cooking of dinner?

Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®, stated, “Fresh food fresh and fast is what consumers continue to demand and nothing is more relevant that a livestream of your meal.”

Now get this, one grocer, The Fresh Market is placing its bets, using a shoppable livestream to promote its Valentine’s Day offerings, focused on meal prep for the February 14 holiday. The shoppable livestream ran at recently and featured television celebrity chef Anna Rossi and chef Chen McCarthy, food developer for The Fresh Market.

Kevin Miller, chief marketing officer for the Greensboro, N.C.-based supermarket operator, stated, “the livestream ties into the retailer’s reputation as a special occasion destination.”

Miller continued, “Shoppable videos are a large component of our retail media strategy,”…“The shoppable livestreams, which range from twenty to forty-five minutes, provide a unique shopping experience in the digital space that allows us to expand our audience reach and attract new customers to The Fresh Market.”

Those who watched were able to buy products during the 45-minute event (which is also available on replay) and could also interact and engage through polls and live chat, Miller said.

Building momentum, The Valentine’s Day event is The Fresh Market’s fifth shoppable livestream in the last nine months. Livestreams in 2022 included the opening of a new store in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., along with events centered around The Fresh Market’s 40th anniversary, Thanksgiving, and the holiday season.

Read this section twice. The combined viewership of The Fresh Market’s first four livestreams exceeded 2 million views, said Miller, who added that the conversion rates of the special occasion meals featured in the livestreams were more than 300% greater than the retailer’s traditional digital advertising results.

New avenues of distribution are key to any business future. The Fresh Market one key objective of the livestreams is to reach existing and new guests through a new medium, Miller said, adding that “we’re providing our guests the ability to be inspired and shop online by bringing our products to life through the power of shoppertainment.”

In case you did not know, last August, The Fresh Market announced that it had surpassed 365 days of total watch time for its video content, including all short-form, shoppable video and live commerce content, across the company's owned media channels that are supported by the Firework shoppable video platform.

In addition to the recent shopper livestream, The Fresh Market is spotlighting fully prepped, read-to-cook meals that the company is positioning as Valentine’s Day options for couples or families.

Selections include a Valentine’s Meal for Two for $59.99, in which customers can chose among entrees that include premium choice chateaubriand cut filet mignon, lump crab cakes, and wild North Atlantic lobster tail.

A Valentine’s Prime Rib Meal for Two for $49.99 includes fully cooked prime rib, while the Valentine’s Day Brunch for 4 for $25 includes items like quiche Lorraine, and broccoli cheddar or spinach tomato quiche.

In addition, The Fresh Market is merchandising Sweetheart Ribeye, which is hand-cut and butterflied into the shape of a heart, as well as heart-shaped crab cakes. Shoppers can order the selections online or in-store and pick up orders from February 10 to 14.
