Grocer’s Relevance Continue to Decline

When a key food sector funded research project study shows a continued decline in key demographic customer loyalty one thing is obvious.  That is, usually things are much worse that then report found according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.
So, currently supermarkets remain the go-to retail venue for fresh produce, but their pull is weaker among younger shoppers, according to the Food Marketing Institute’s 2019 “The Power of Produce” study. What other avenues of distribution are consumers migrating? Well, according to Johnson grocerant niche restaurants, dollar stores, and grocerant niche convenience stores.
Shockingly the report found that only 50% of all shoppers cited a full-service supermarket as their primary store for purchasing fresh produce. Wow, have things changed since I was a kid.  All that said FMI’s report gives traditional grocery stores a leg up on other retail formats, given that 55% of grocery trips include fresh produce. Ok, you know what I’ am going to say now.  We told you so! Yes, Grocerant niche fresh food sales continue to drive customer migration.

Here is where the FMI study edified what we have been saying for 1 years.  They found that the younger generation exhibits a greater affinity for buying fresh fruit and/or vegetables at supercenters and alternative retail channels, including online, dollar stores, convenience stores and farmers’ markets. Of consumers polled, just 34% of older Millennials named a supermarket as their primary store for produce.
Rick Stein, vice president of fresh foods at FMI, said in a statement. “Specifically, the study suggests a need for a renewed focus on strategies for continued growth, including organic, locally grown produce; value-added produce for time-starved customers; produce-based beverages and private branded produce.” What he meant to say is you DONING WHAT YOU HAVE ALWAYS DONE AND DOING THE SAME WAY WILL NO LONGER WORK.
Here is some information from the study all food retailers will find useful.
1.        “Fresh fruit and vegetables also show potential to fit into more eating occasions. Although 36% of consumers polled said they eat fresh produce about three times a week or less, they would like to include it more frequently in meals or snacks, FMI found.
2.       56% of shoppers buy veggie shakes or fruit smoothies, and 53% buy cold-press juices. Those figures don’t include similar beverages people make at home or purchase from other areas of the store, such as kombucha.

Want a Fresh Sandwich for a $ 1.00 Try 7 Eleven

Sampling and product trial are the best ways for a brand to garner new customers according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®. Success does leave clues and 7 Eleven once again is extending in reach into grocerant niche Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat fresh food with a price focused limited time offer targeting new sandwich offerings for spring and summer.
Yes, there is a catch, 7-Eleven is offering dollar deals on select freshly prepared deli sandwiches at participating Texas locations only from March 18-22. These new sandwiches are made using artisan breads baked especially for 7-Eleven by Dallas-based Village Baking Co.
Bob Frey, 7-Eleven director of merchandising Stated "Most people probably wouldn't expect to find a sandwich bought in a convenience store served on hand-crafted bread baked in a French bakery right here in Dallas," "It may be unexpected, but it's that kind of quality we want customers to expect in all 7-Eleven fresh foods."
Like most grocerant niche fresh food these have a ‘halo’ of better-for-you around them according to Johnson.  Think about it for $1, a customers can choose from an Italian sub; a bistro-style three-meat deli sandwich; traditional favorites such as chicken, tuna or egg salad; a better-for-you 7-Select GO!Smart turkey sandwich; or peanut butter and jelly.
Here is what I think is a hick-up and a miscue when it comes to brand building; the sandwich offer is only available to registered members of the convenience store retailer's 7Rewards loyalty program. Customers are limited to one discounted sandwich per day. Thus, they are a reward not a branded invitation.
Tarang Sethia, 7-Eleven vice president of digital customer experience stated "We always want to provide customers with the best value and deals," .. "7-Eleven sandwiches are a good deal any day of the week, but during the week of March 18, sandwich-lovers can busy their favorites or try something new at one of the best prices ever only through the 7Rewards loyalty app." So, Tarang why don’t you want to expand your customer base?

Chipotle Expands the ‘Halo’ of Better-for-You’

Regular readers of this blog know that the foodservice business is about food.  They know it is not about brain surgery it is about grocerant niche Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat fresh food.  Companies that focus on food, fresh food, customer service, with a halo of better for you are winners according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.
Adding value to customer base focusing on fresh food once again Chipotle Mexican Grill out focused its competitors when they announced an exclusive "Home Grown Chipotle" boxes will be available for purchase online here for a limited time starting Wednesday, March 20, on National Plant a Seed Day.

Caitlin Leibert, Sustainability Director at Chipotle stated "One of the things that makes Chipotle so unique is the dedication we have to real ingredients that are prepared fresh daily and sourced responsibly," .. The ‘Home Grown’ Chipotle boxes are perfect for Plant a Seed Day and represent what is celebrated in our restaurants daily" according to Leibert. Now my friends that is brand building integrated food marketing.

NCAA Tournament Kickoff Domino’s Pizza 50% Off

The NCAA Basketball tournament is one of the world’s top sporting activities and it is estimated to be the single largest ‘illegal gambling /betting venue in the world’ clearly bracketology is an untamed art. There are times all food retailers should look for ways to drive customer relevance with a point of differentiation according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.
All that being said Domino's Pizza is celebrating college basketball's biggest month by offering 50 percent off all menu-priced pizzas ordered online through March 24.  Clearly at Domino’s this is an example how differentiation, innovation in a limited time offer did not take place.
Domino’s 50 percent off deal is available on menu-priced pizzas ordered through any of the following Domino's online ordering channels: www.dominos.com, Domino's mobile app, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Facebook Messenger and voice ordering with Dom. Fun Facts—Domino's and Basketball:
1.        Domino's sold more than 2 million pizzas during the 2018 semifinals and championship game night combined—enough to give more than 27 pizzas to each person attending the final game in Minneapolis this year.
2.        During the 2018 college basketball tournament, Domino's produced enough dough to match the weight of nearly 22 million basketballs.
3.        It takes 69 Domino's pizza boxes stacked from the floor of a basketball court to reach the hoop.
4.        It takes more than 4,500 Domino's pizza boxes to cover a 4,600-square-foot basketball court.
Marketing differentiation is important.  Don’t let mediocrity and price replace become a substitute for customer engagement, differentiation, or innovation. Are you looking a customer ahead or just trying to get through the day, week, or month?

Grocerants: Why This Business Model Is Taking Over

The way consumers eat is changing. In the modern world, getting food is more convenient thanks to things like mobile ordering apps and meal delivery services such as Yumble. This makes it easier for those who do want to stay in to have a good meal without having to worry about cooking. (Today we have a Guest Blog post provided by Oliva Chang.)
But, according to a recent Nielsen study, Americans are choosing to dine out in greater numbers than ever before. This is one factor contributing to the increasing popularity of grocerants, which are essentially grocery stores offering both shopping and dining options.
This emerging business model offers several major benefits to consumers. Convenience is a major one. Although people are now more interested in dining out than they once were, they still need to buy groceries from time to time. Being able to do both in one location helps them save time. This is very helpful in an age where constant connectivity has resulted in busy lifestyles.
Additionally, statistics indicate traditional restaurant menu prices have been rising, while grocery prices have not. Grocery stores that allow shoppers to purchase items and dine right there in the store may therefore save consumers money.
The following trends help to further explain why and how the grocerant model has become popular in recent years:
Spending Habits
Unlike previous generations, the vast majority of millennials would rather spend money on experiences instead of products. The grocerant model simply caters to their preferences. This trend is likely to continue, given that studies confirm having experiences makes people happier than owning possessions.
Social Media
Social media has given the average consumer greater opportunities than ever to share their opinions on the food they eat. Going to a restaurant or your local grocery store and sharing a picture of a meal (along with a brief review) on Instagram allows anyone to indulge their inner food critic.
Social Awareness
A recent study indicates consumers now prefer to connect with brands that prioritize sustainability. On top of that, the number of farmers markets in the United States has risen substantially in recent years.
Consumers no longer feel satisfied heading to grocery stores to buy products without knowing anything about their origins, the manufacturing process, the supply chain, and various other factors that impact how sustainable a product may be. They’d rather dine at spots where they can learn about how their food reached their plate.
A traditional grocery store typically won’t offer this information, while a grocerant often can and will. It’s also worth noting that dining out can produce less waste than buying groceries, which often use up substantial resources for packaging.
On-Demand Services
It’s clear to see the ways in which on-demand food delivery apps have changed the way consumers eat. Instead of cooking their own meals, people want meals delivered straight to them. A grocerant can offer this service.
These are merely a few reasons people have begun embracing grocerants in record numbers. Traditional grocery stores should take notice. In order to stay competitive, they’ll have to shift their business models to meet changing consumer expectations.

Pilot Flying J’s Food First Footprint Fuels Success

Success does leave clues and grocerant niche fresh food has been the platform of success that most food retail choose when they decide to evolve their brans with customer relevance and Pilot Flying J has made the right choices according to Steven Johnson, Tacoma, WA based Grocerant Guru® at Foodservice Solutions®.
When it comes to homestyle comfort foods PJ Fresh offering at Pilot Flying J are filled with grocerant grab-n-go fresh food options that make the ‘pit-stop’’ well worth it according to Johnson. In an effort to drive incremental growth Pilot Flying J developed a third branded footprint called Pilot Express unit as a way to enter areas where a typical major travel center won't fit from a land and acreage standpoint.
Pilot Flying J Chief Merchant Brian Ferguson describes the Pilot Express concept as a "Food first" unit. Pilot Express stores spotlight the retailer's commitment to food and beverage innovation, offering homestyle meals, grab-and-go and made-to-order sandwiches and salads, premium beverages, a bean-to-cup coffee experience and weekly limited-time offers.
Ferguson continued "We want you to walk in to an experience that you've never [had] at a Pilot before. We created a store environment that's about getting you fueled quickly, giving you tremendous options in food and beverage, and getting you out quickly,"
Pilot Flying J's Vice President of Food Innovation Shannon Johnson said Pilot Express stores have found a sweet spot by offering a variety of food offers that meet different needs. The winning equation includes:
·         Anticipating guest need — both immediate transaction and relaxing destination;
·         Being varied and flexible — in the same store, you can see a hot homestyle offering that allows a guest to eat and relax next to a grab-and-go item for the person of the go;
·         Splitting grab-and-go into two categories: hot and chilled; and
·         Tying in authenticity and quality.
"We went out to market with a variety of food offers all at the same time and what we found was somewhat unexpected: that the blend of all those things was how we’re going to win," Shannon Johnson shared. "It really differentiates us in the marketplace because a lot of our competitive set doesn’t have the mix of offers that we do. We learned so much from Pilot Express." Is your business ready to evolve?

Is Burger King Stepping-Up and Standing-Out?

Copy-cat marketing and follow-the-leader positioning just might be pushed aside at Burger King or at least that is what Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® wants to believe.  Regular readers of this blog know Johnson has time and time again pointed out that copy-cat marketing and follow-the-leader positioning is required at times he has pointed out at Burger King it has been over-done.
Burger King with this one new food marketing limited time offer (LTO) has redefined the price, value, service, equilibrium for fresh food breakfast for all retailers according to Johnson. This program edifies relevance with Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X (all but forgotten) and Boomers according to Johnson.
OK, so what is the LTO? It is an app-based BK Cafe Subscription costs $5 a month and entitles users to one small brewed coffee per day per month. Talk about value this is a wake-up call for AM Daypart Sales, it’s a great loyalty program, it is hand-held-food marketing at it’s best according to Johnson.
There is no doubt but this platform of fast food value subscription will create distance between Burger King and other retailers including Wawa, Sheetz, Starbucks, and yes McDonalds in the AM Daypart.  More important this new positioning platform could do for Burger King what the $ 5 Footlong did for Subway according to Johnson.
Adding relevance to their most frequent consumers the BK Cafe Subscription, available only through the burger chain’s app, entitles users to one small hot brewed coffee per day for “the price of a large cappuccino from Starbucks,” according to the company’s marketing materials. You just have to like that!
Playing catch-up for any chain restaurant is hard to do.  This is one LTO where Burger King has stepped up to the plate and it looks to the team at Foodservice Solutions® that they have hit a home run with this one.
