Success
does leave clues some pick them up, others have a blind-eye, all however are
affected according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at
Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.
The question is why do some companies ignore the facts and trends, for
industry norms of yesterday? Johnson say’s brand protectionism of a bygone era
is alive and well within the restaurant sector.
The simple
truth is the restaurant sector continues to capitulate customers to both the
grocery store sector and convenience store sector. Grocers and C-stores have
evolved fresh food offering to the point that in many 78.1% of service deli
fresh food and C-store fresh food was ‘restaurant quality or better’.
According
TDn2K’s Black Box Intelligence
restaurant sector customer traffic declined 1.4 percent in September and dipped
1.2 percent for the third quarter of 2018, compared with the year ago third
quarter. Even more troubling, same-store traffic declined 5.7 percent over the
same two-year period.
Here is
why we call it a blind-eye for the restaurant sector; the fact that the third
quarter of 2018 was still the best quarter for traffic in the last three years
highlights the magnitude of the continued market share battle for guest
traffic. Is it time for the restaurant sector to embrace grocerant niche fresh prepared
food sales? Well you know we think
so. Grocery stores don’t want to see it
nor to C-stores? Why?
