Aldi: Redefining Consumer Value in an Era of Rising Prices

As grocery prices continue to surge across the industry, consumers are increasingly seeking stores that align with their financial concerns and lifestyle needs. Now, according to Steven Johnson Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®, Aldi, the German-based discount supermarket chain, has emerged as a champion of consumer relevance, setting itself apart with strategic timing of specials, consistently low prices, impressive new store growth, unique food discovery experiences, and an empowering mix-and-match bundling approach are but some of the success clues you can pick up from Aldi.

Consumer Relevance: Understanding What Shoppers Need

In 2024, with grocery prices reportedly up 50% on hundreds of items since 2019, Aldi's promise to deliver value could not be more relevant. One of the most telling examples is their announcement of a Thanksgiving bundle priced at just $47, a record low in five years. At a time when many families are forced to cut back, Aldi’s offer enables shoppers to feed 10 people for under $4.70 per person—a stark contrast to the bloated price tags found elsewhere. By keeping consumer financial realities front and center, Aldi demonstrates a deep understanding of what shoppers truly need during peak spending seasons.

Timing of Specials: When Consumers Need It Most

Aldi’s ability to release timely specials sets it apart from legacy grocery retailers. Their Thanksgiving bundle, valid from Oct. 16 to Nov. 27, 2024, highlights their knack for providing key deals when consumers are planning large meals. This isn’t a one-off strategy either; Aldi regularly aligns its promotions with consumer need cycles, delivering discounts and meal solutions at the right moment, reinforcing why 25% of U.S. households now shop at Aldi. In contrast, many legacy grocers adhere to rigid promotional calendars that fail to match the shifting dynamics of modern consumer behavior.

Price Leadership: A Competitive Edge in an Inflationary World

While grocery giants struggle with rising costs, Aldi has retained its stronghold on price leadership. The $47 Thanksgiving dinner bundle, featuring a 16-pound Butterball turkey and a full menu of side dishes and desserts, is not just a price point—it’s a consumer win. Even more impressive is that Aldi’s pricing in 2024 is lower than it was in 2019, showcasing a commitment to bucking industry trends. With inflation driving up food costs, many legacy retailers have adopted a "pass-the-cost" model, leaving shoppers to bear the brunt. Aldi, however, remains a standout for delivering consistent savings.

Store Growth: Reaching More Communities

Aldi’s rapid new store growth across the U.S. is another testament to its consumer-centric approach. By expanding its footprint into both suburban and urban areas, Aldi brings its low prices and unique value propositions to more households. In an industry where new store openings are often seen as a risk, Aldi’s confidence in its model continues to yield rewards. Its expansion strategy contrasts with many legacy grocers, whose growth is either stagnating or overly focused on high-margin, upscale locations—leaving middle-income consumers underserved.

Food Discovery: Elevating the Grocery Experience

Aldi is not only known for price but also for making grocery shopping an engaging experience. Its exclusive products, many of which are limited-time specials, offer consumers an element of discovery each time they shop. Aldi’s curated, rotating selections—from international delicacies to organic produce—create excitement and encourage repeat visits. In contrast, traditional grocers tend to rely on a static product assortment that often fails to excite modern shoppers who crave novelty and variety in their meals.

Holiday Value: Simplifying Seasonal Shopping

When it comes to the holidays, Aldi excels in offering a well-rounded selection that simplifies shopping without sacrificing quality. The 2024 Thanksgiving bundle is a prime example of how Aldi understands the pressure consumers face during the holiday season. For less than $50, Aldi provides a full-course meal that includes the turkey, sides, and dessert, offering a hassle-free solution at unbeatable value. While competitors may offer piecemeal discounts, Aldi delivers a bundled package that simplifies decision-making and maximizes savings, especially at a time when other grocers are focused on squeezing out higher margins.

Mix-and-Match Bundling: Empowering Consumer Choice

Beyond its seasonal specials, Aldi’s approach to bundling empowers consumers year-round. By offering meal components that can be mixed and matched, shoppers have the flexibility to customize their purchases based on taste preferences, dietary needs, and budget constraints. This contrasts sharply with the rigid meal kit offerings from many traditional grocers, which often lock consumers into pre-set menus and higher price points. Aldi’s bundling strategy acknowledges that consumer choice is paramount, especially in today’s diverse food landscape.

Legacy Grocery Retailers: Stuck in the Past

While Aldi thrives on innovation and consumer alignment, many legacy grocery retailers continue to use outdated marketing playbooks that fail to resonate with modern shoppers. From inflexible pricing structures to uninspired product assortments, these traditional grocers are losing relevance as they cling to practices that no longer match consumer expectations. Aldi’s forward-thinking strategies—such as dynamic pricing, timely specials, and a focus on empowering consumer choice—are leaving legacy players behind.

Think about this, Aldi’s unmatched value proposition, driven by timely specials, price leadership, and consumer-focused strategies, positions it as a leader in the grocery sector. By meeting consumers where they are, both financially and emotionally, Aldi ensures long-term brand loyalty while delivering on its core promise: exceptional value, every day. As legacy retailers grapple with outdated strategies, Aldi continues to redefine what it means to shop smart in a challenging economic climate.

Success does leave clues. One clue that time and time again continues to resurface is “the consumer is dynamic not static”.  Regular readers of this blog know that is the common refrain of Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.  Our Grocerant Guru® can help your company edify your brand with relevance.  Call 253-759-7869 for more information.

Gen Z and Millennials focused Fresh Street too Drive New Grocery Shopping Habits

What goes around comes around.  Differentiation does not mean different it means familiar according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.  Today, digital coupons are leading the way in terms of redemptions, holding a 34-percent share of redemption versus free-standing inserts, which came in second at 24 percent.

Now, according to the Inmar Intelligence 2022 "Promotion Industry Analysis." This marks the second consecutive year that digital coupons have led in redemptions.

With a 7.9-percent increase in the U.S. Consumer Price Index along with continuing supply chain challenges, shoppers are looking for savings today more than ever, according to Inmar Intelligence. Nearly one-third of shoppers increased their coupon usage in 2021 and 54 percent did so because of financial pressures.

So, based on the Inmar Intelligence 2022 report, these shoppers are turning to digital coupons over other savings options, with 72 percent of shoppers reporting they used a digital coupon in-store. In fact, there was a 13-percent increase in digital coupon redemption in 2021, as inflation started to take hold. Brands reacted swiftly to the increased shopper demand and increased digital coupon distribution by 28 percent in 2021, noted the research firm.

In a Battle for Share of Stomach

New Companies Can Win

Now at the intersection of Gen Z and Millennial consumers is a new start-up looking to disrupt a fading, fragial, floundering legacy grocery industry according to Johnson.  That company Fresh Street , and is built exclusively for online, click-and-collect shopping opening in Chicago.

Offering no substitutions, no fees and affordable local products, Fresh Street will serve as a convenient way for Chicagoans to get their groceries.

Michael Fassnacht, president & CEO of World Business Chicago, and chief marketing officer for the City of Chicago, stated, “Chicago is the number one city for food innovation and logistics in the country, both sectors are strong drivers of our city’s economic recovery, job growth and neighborhood expansion,”… “In this spirit, we are incredibly pleased to join Fresh Street today for the launch of its online grocery platform in West Rogers Park. We look forward to seeing this new grocery option represent legacy and emerging Chicago food brands as it grows and expands throughout the city and country.”

So, on the heels of securing $4 million in seed round funding this past October, Fresh Street said it has one goal in mind: a satisfied customer. The grocer said its mobile app (iOS and Android) or desktop experience promises users no substitutions and only real-time inventory. Without customers in-store, the app always reflects real volume, the company said, and pickups will be available within 30 minutes of placing an order. In fact, the 10,000-square-foot location is all about curbing the friction that plagues grocery pickup experiences the company said.

Is your company at an intersection?  Are looking a customer ahead?  Don’t get lulled into doing what you have always done and kept doing it the same way.  That has proven to be a problimic path forward.

With Help from a Restaurant Executive Bulk Plans to Disrupt Grocers

There is no doubt that the food industry is tired of disruption, supply chain problems, continuing customer migration, on top of the problems maintaining employees. However. no one cares if you are tired of doing what you have always done and are complaining.

In the case of grocery stores while they ‘spin’ to CNBC how much progress they are making, how sales are up, how great they are, they are forgetting to inform that that without inflation, the pandemic, that simply would not be the case.

In fact, regular readers of this blog know that in the last 12 years there are 50% fewer legacy grocery stores than there used to be.  They also know that there are 29 restaurants for every grocery store in the U.S. today.  Why, consumers don’t want to take the time to cook from scratch, but even more important they have distain for the time it takes to walk around a grocery store when they only need three or four items.

They also know that the average American buys only 100 items a year from a grocery store. They may buy those times weekly, monthly, but very few Americans buy more than 100 different items from their local grocery store.

Well, readers of this blog are not the only ones that know that. E-grocer Buyk is now planning national expansion after launching three months ago in NYC. Buyk is launching operations in Chicago with six “dark stores” to fulfill online grocery orders, which are delivered by bike-riding couriers dubbed "buykers."

Recently, Buyk announced its official launch in Chicago last week as part of plans to enter more U.S. markets in 2022. The e-grocer said it’s starting operations in Chicago with six “dark stores” to fulfill online grocery orders. Initially, the service is slated to cover the city’s Wicker Park, Bucktown, Old Irving Park, Ravenswood, Sheffield Neighbors, and Logan Square neighborhoods.

Plans call for Buyk to open another 14 dark stores in Chicago by the end of the 2022 first quarter, which the company said will raise its dark store count to 35 for both New York and Chicago.

You will love this; Online grocery orders made via the Buyk app carry no delivery fee and aren't subject to a minimum purchase. So, if you have a smart phone, which most of us have now and you live in Chicago you can save time and money, while adding incremental convenience to your life according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.

Buyk CEO James Walker, stated, “Chicago is where trends, especially in retail, become mainstream. This is why Buyk has chosen the Windy City as the next frontier to disrupt the way Americans get their groceries,”… “We hope that unbeatable delivery speed and quality of products become as synonymous with our brand name as deep-dish pizza is with Chicago. We want to capture this growth momentum and bring this technology not just to big bicoastal metropolises, to which so many advancements are limited in the United States. Buyk wants to take instant grocery delivery in the U.S. inland, and our technology, smart unit economics and lean growth strategies will help make this a reality.”

Growth comes fast, as the Chicago market entry comes just over three months after Buyk’s service made its debut with the launch of free, “ultrafast” grocery delivery in New York City. Buyk said its online grocery model combines its proprietary technology stack with a network of dark stores, or “new generation” micro-fulfillment centers, to deliver fresh food, groceries and other essentials — including household and beauty care items — to customers’ homes within 15 minutes. Buyk also offers local New York City brands and said it aims to expand its in-app offering to include a selection of local Chicago favorites.

When you consider that each of the dark stores each carry 2,000 to 3,000 SKUs and are strategically located to enable maximum coverage in the fastest possible time, according to Buyk. The company noted that its technology optimizes the speed of order picking and delivery and provides detailed information on a hyperlocal level, allowing each dark store to tailor its stock to the communities it serves.

If you are a urban home owner you will love that fact that when a order is placed via the Buyk app, orders require no delivery fee or minimum spend and are collected within two minutes for delivery by bicycle-riding couriers — dubbed “buykers” — in another five to 10 minutes, Buyk reported. The company said its fulfillment centers are similar to grocery stores, with shelves and refrigerators stocked with products available for purchase, and direct partnerships with local suppliers enable price-matching with area grocery retailers.

Buyk kicked off its service in Manhattan on Sept. 14 and then in early November expanded to the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, served by 20 dark stores. At launch, the company said it aims to launch operations in “the largest metro areas across the U.S.” in 2022 as well as develop a private-label offering “in the not-too-distant future.”

The back story: Buyk was founded by entrepreneurs Rodion Shishkov and Slava Bocharov, who previously started and ran Samokat, a Russian instant grocery delivery service and, according to the company, one of the largest operators of dark stores among on-demand grocers outside of China.

Walker, formerly senior vice president of restaurants at Nathan’s Famous, was named as Buyk’s CEO in mid-November. His 30-plus years of senior management experience in the hospitality and retail industries include such brands as Nathan’s Famous, Baja Fresh, Cinnabon and Subway.

Walker continued, “I’ve been highly impressed by both the company’s early success, as well as the proven expertise and track record of the founders. Add Buyk’s unique technology to the mix and you can see why I felt compelled to become part of the Buyk team,”... “I am confident I can bring great value to the company and drive our fast-growing operations to meet our ambitious goal

HelloFresh Meals, Meal Kits, make Menu Magic

With new avenues of fresh food distribution opening up around the world monthly, weekly, and seemingly daily food retailers must ask themselves one question every Monday morning.  That question is what are we selling, to whom, and where?  That is according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru®, at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.

HelloFresh, was at one time only a Berlin, Germany based meal kit company.  Is doing all the right things according to the Grocerant Guru® because it clearly appears that they are not only asking all the right questions on Monday mornings, but following up with action that is garnering top line sales and bottom-line profits.

Regular readers of this blog know that HelloFresh now has a growing U.S. presence. They are now entering the highly competitive online grocery business today with the launch of HelloFresh Market. So, HelloFresh Market is a digital store that offers customers a range of add-ons to the meal kit order they already receive on their doorstep—from quick meals to pantry essentials, fresh produce and ready-to-heat meals. That will drive incremental sales of Grocerant niche Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat fresh prepared meals according to Johnson.

Uwe Voss, CEO of HelloFresh U.S said during an interview, “Ultimately for us the goal is to move to a broader food solutions group instead of a dinner solutions group,”… “We hope to take customers to other meal occasions. Right now, they receive three to five dinnertime recipes from us, but we don’t have an option for you if you want a solution for lunch, breakfast or complements to dinner such as sides, soups and salads. We know customers are interested in this.”

Winning the Battle for

Share of Stomach

This developing business strategy is so important as introduction of HelloFresh Market is part of HelloFresh’s midterm growth strategy, and an important step for the company with ambitions to become “the world’s leading fully integrated food solutions group.” We ask you what are your next steps?  What new avenues of distribution are you going to be expanding your brand?

HelloFresh is aiming to grab a “larger share of the dollar spend,” HelloFresh Market seeks to offer greater value and convenience to customers as a one-stop option for both curated grocery items and mealtime inspiration, Voss stated. Regular readers of this blog know we call this garnering a larger share of stomach.

The HelloFresh Market will launch with what Voss describes as a “very curated set of grocery items.” But the company’s sights are set quite literally on the bread and butter of the grocery business. Which means cherry picking the most requested replenished grocery items.  Basically, they are going to do to the grocery store sector the same thing dollar stores did.  That is be open, upfront, and win market share.

Voss continued, “Our end game isn’t 150 items. We see growing to 1,000 to 2,000 SKUs over time, into items like bread and butter, dairy—high-frequency purchase items, adding that the HelloFresh Market grocery offerings are a “starting point” of items that should feel familiar to customers as they have already enjoyed them in HelloFresh meal kits.

Most food retailers now that know that selling 50 kinds of bread does nothing to drive top-line sales or bottom-line profits. Voss reiterated, “We’re not going to sell 50 types of bread and we don’t want to lose sight of what’s comfortable for our customers who stay with us for frequency of choice,”  “The Market is very curated and fun—just like our cooking experiences.”

The introduction of HelloFresh Market in the U.S. follows the successful launch in the Benelux region, of Europe, where customers could choose from over 150 add-on items to complement their weekly meal kit recipes. Within that region, HelloFresh observed a strong link between the size of the product range and the proportion of customers purchasing add-ons through the Market, which the company will look to replicate in the U.S. As a result, HelloFresh is significantly expanding its product range across categories to provide customers with a variety of items tailored to enhance the shopping and cooking experience.

So, for HelloFresh, the beauty of its meal kit box model is the existing infrastructure to make its expansion into grocery delivery seamless for both the company and its customers.

Voss continued, “Building an exceptional meal-kit experience over the past 10 years has been key to establishing strong market leadership,”. “Through our state-of-the-art supply chain and technology infrastructure, we will provide superior full-service delivery for all meal occasions and capture a greater share of our customers’ overall food budget.”

“HelloFresh is leveraging the box to cover more food occasions,” …“Generally, as a business, we’re always looking to move closer to the customer and shorten the time it takes to get items delivered. With Market, it’s exactly the same as getting a HelloFresh box delivered. We got the whole supply chain taken care of. It’s just a matter of tagging additional high-value items on an existing order. “And it makes economic sense,”

So, how much will all this cost? HelloFresh customers can add grocery items to their meal kit orders without incurring additional shipping charges. “Say, you buy a cheesecake. It doesn’t come at an extra cost. The only thing you pay for is the cost of the cheesecake. We don’t charge extra for shipping according to the statement from HelloFresh.

The range of HelloFresh Market offerings that will be rolling out to all customers across the U.S. over the coming months. Its curated offerings are categorized into Seasonal Bundles (cheese burgers, baby back ribs and mac and cheese); Quick Meals, Quick Breakfast (cheesy breakfast tacos, kale salad, cheese tortellini with marinara sauce and assorted Intelligentsia coffees); Sides & Complements, Desserts & Treats (garlic bread, gumbo, salads and sweets such as chocolate chip cookie dough and cheesecake); Proteins, Fresh Produce (chicken, ground turkey, apples and avocados); Grains & Pastas & Breads, Cheese (Jasmine rice, brioche buns and ricotta cheese); and Pantry Essentials, HelloFresh Flavors (olive oil, salt, pepper and seasonings).

Add things you know and like will help HelloFresh Market which will feature partnerships with a growing list of high-quality purveyors, such as Epicurean Butter, Pillsbury, Intelligentsia Coffee, Annie’s, Vive Wellness Shots and more, to offer a rotating assortment of new and exciting options, the company said.

HelloFresh has extensive experience in keeping its customers coming back for more. Its customers already rate its meal kit products every week, and Voss said the same ratings will apply to grocery items. “If a recipe doesn’t perform in our meal kits, it doesn’t come back. If there’s not enough interest in a grocery item, we will not continue to carry it.

“Our assortment is going to get more and more powerful because it’s cultivated by our customer,” added Voss. “We have to put a stake in the ground starting with 150 items. Not all 150 will be home runs out of the gate. We’ll continue to go deeper and deeper into what customers like.”

The grocerant niche is filled with Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat fresh prepared food that is portable, much of which has the halo of better for you around it.  HelloFresh Market is focused you garnering a larger share of stomach.  We think they are the right track.

Dollar General Fresh Food will Drive Customer Frequency

The Dollar store sector had been garnering customers from grocery stores for so long that today many consumers when they think about grocery shopping they think Dollar General first according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.
It appears as if is as easy a taking candy from a baby according to Johnson.  The Dollar store sector continues to expand fresh food offering and legacy grocery store are have closed over 51% of their legacy grocery stores over the past 12 years. Kind of makes you realize that doing the same thing the same way may not be in the best interest of a grocery brand. Doesn’t it.
With over 16,000 stores open, Dollar General strives to capture more consumer grocery spending, by adding more and more fresh produce. When Dollar General announced that it offers a “curated assortment of produce” in about 650 of its more than 16,000 locations it made you wonder how long can grocery stores continue not to evolve.

Dollar General’s renewed focus on fresh fruits and vegetables stems from the retailer’s broader efforts to expand its grocery selections. When you look around in new or remodeled Dollar General stores you will find beside the fresh fruit and produce lots of grocerant niche Ready-2-Eat or Heat-N-Eat food portioned and priced to garner grocery store customers.
Dollar General this year plans to add fresh produce selections to 400 stores across the country, “up from a previous goal of about 250 stores, bringing the total number of stores with produce to more than 1,000 by year-end,” said chief operating officer Jeff Owen in March during the fourth-quarter financial report conference call with analysts. “We are also accelerating the expansion of our fresh produce offering, which provides the Top 20 items typically sold in traditional grocery stores and covers approximately 80% of the overall categories they carry,” he said.
The consumer is dynamic not static. Dollar General understands that and continues to drive customer frequency with new offerings.  Differentiation does not mean different it means familiar but with a twist. Dollar General has a twist a combination of fresh, fast, food priced for today’s consumers.
Success does leave clues. One clue that time and time again continues to resurface is “the consumer is dynamic not static”.  Regular readers of this blog know that is the common refrain of Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.  Our Grocerant Guru® can help your company 253-759-7869.
