More
often than not it’s the commonality of consumers that expand, extend, and
elevate foodservice trends according to Foodservice
Solutions®
Grocerant Guru®. That is the case for
grocerant niche Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat fresh prepared food.
When
the US Census reported that 50%
of Americans over the age of 18 are single it signaled that the
retail market place was evolving faster than a Norman Rockwell painting. Our
Grocerant Guru® has repeatedly sated “smaller households, smaller basket size,
singles seek portability, convenience, and alternatives to cooking i.e.
restaurant meals. In fact today there are 24 restaurants for
every 1 grocery store, that my friend’s is customer
migration.
In
a new report by The NPD Group they found that “While Millennials overtook
boomers in population number in 2015, both generational groups are large and
it’s the size of the prize that appeals to snack manufacturers. Based on
NPD’s snacking research, annual eating’s of ready-to-eat
snacks per boomer are about 1200, or a total of 90.4 billion snacks, and there
are about 1,000 snack occasions for each Millennial or a total of 83.1 billion
snacks.”
Clearly
smaller portions drive lower prices pre item, and portability drives
sales. Remember 79% of all restaurant
visits are too Quick Service Restaurants. Cooking and doing
dishes for one person is not financially practical, time efficient, or on most
singles consumer top ten list of things to do according to the team at
Foodservice Solutions.
Grocery
stores continue to test
new concept stores that are filled with Ready-2-Eat and
Heat-N-Eat fresh prepared food to garner a larger share of stomach. Convenience store the ilk of Sheetz and Wawa continue to expand
store counts, top line sales and bottom line profits driven by increased
success with fresh food sales.
The
NPD report went on to say “Millennials reach for what is often a grab-and-go
snack because they’re hungry. Boomers snack because they don’t want to prepare
a big meal and eat alone more often than other age groups.”
Food
retail is evolving faster than ever before.
