Grocerant Niche Getting Bigger, Better, Becoming the Best Foodservice Sector

When the consumer moves retailers must move with them.  The grocerant niche filled with Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat fresh prepared food continues to drive customer adoption from cook away from scratch according to Foodservice Solutions® Grocerant Guru®.

In new research from Acosta “The Why? Behind the Dine” found “foodservice share of spending now accounts for more than half of all food sales, surpassing grocery retail by 1.2 percentage points. Total food spending, driven by new food and meal solutions, is at an estimated $1.4 trillion.”

Now you see that Foodservice Solutions® team has been busy leading the grocerant niche since 1991 and continues to lead the success of evolving grocerant niche.Acosta found that during the past three months, the top five methods of food consumption among 1,500 U.S. diners surveyed in August 2015 were:

1.  Eating a meal at home (95 percent)
2.   Eating a restaurant meal (85 percent)
3.   Getting carry-out (63 percent)
4.  Using a drive-through (63 percent)
5.   Eating grocery-prepared foods (57 percent)

Demographically, during the past three months:

A.   64 percent of Millennial diners (18-34 years) have consumed grocery-prepared food, versus 51 percent of Baby Boomer diners (51-69 years).
B.   53 percent of Gen X diners (35-50 years) have ordered restaurant delivery food, versus 23 percent of Boomer diners (51-69 years).
C.   20 percent of diners with kids have ordered an online meal/ingredient kit, versus 2 percent of diners without kids.

One thing is painfully clear from the Acosta report and that as regular readers of this blog know is customer migration from cook from scratch to Ready-2-Eat and Heat-N-Eat fresh prepared food options continues to grow.  That growth and how and where consumers are getting grocerant niche fresh food is fast becoming a threat to legacy grocery retailers.  The retail food space is evolving faster than many legacy retailers want.
