Meal Kits are Millennial Magic and ‘Better-for-You’





Meal Kits are garnering a larger and larger Share-of-Stomach according to Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions® Grocerant Guru® Steven Johnson.  The simple fact is that Millennials consider Meal Kits training wheels for meal planning, cooking dinner, and recipe solutions that save time according to Johnson.    Restaurants are beginning to enter the meal kit niche as the NRA’s Hudson Riehle found 49% of U.S. adults would buy meal kits to prepare at home if their favorite restaurant offered them becoming another pantry buster.
 Why go to the grocery stores when you are planning dinner?  Well there are a lot of people that don’t in fact According to a new Harris Poll “one in four adults bought a meal kit in 2016, and 70 percent of meal kit purchasers are still actively buying them” The poll found that the top reason for buying meal kits saving time! 

A recent Nielsen study found that “men are 40% more likely to purchase kits than their female counterparts across all generations, while Millennials and Generation X consumers are 321% more likely to purchase them than older generations. Busy families with children are also enjoying the convenience and healthy options meal kits have to offer, purchasing them 326% more than households without children.”
Findings from the Harris poll did not point have much good news for legacy grocery retailers as it pointed out that “a majority of active meal kit purchasers believed that meal kit dinners are healthier than supermarket prepared foods.”
Additionally Nielsen found that 92% are satisfied with the quality of produce included in their meal kits, and 91% say they’re satisfied with the quality of the meat packaging.  According to our won Grocerant Guru® the cost of meals from meal kit companies the ilk of Home Chef, Plated, Hello Fresh, and Blue Apron will come down as nearly half (46%) of U.S. consumers say they would be more likely to purchase a meal kit if it were less expensive, 86% would like the ability to add dessert to their meal kit.
