Foodservice Solutions® Grocerant Guru™ with an high degree regularity as
regular readers of this blog know reminds everyone not to discount
McDonald’s. We all know that McDonald’s
sells more ‘toys’ in the world than any retailer. Well they just kicked it up a notch once
again.
With the introduction of Nanoblocks McDonald’s has elevated the playing field once
again. Nanoblocks was launched in Hong Kong on June
4, 2015 and sold out within hours. Yes, McDonald’s in Hong Kong has sold out in
restaurants across the island in just hours.
The promotional items that include a Big Mac, fries, milkshake, apple pie,
McFlurry, and tiny McDonald’s restaurant, all built using the novelty toy
blocks were individually on sale for $20HKD (around $2.50) when buying a
meal, and proved to be such a hit with customers that many outlets sold
out in next to no time. McDonalds does understand incremental sales.
It has been reported that “a limited
number of extra units have been made available for purchase up until June 24
($198HKD, or $25 for the full set), chances are they won’t hang around for
long. Click here (if you read Chinese) for more
information.”
Here is what we know. When McDonalds runs an LTO that works, they
will run it again. They will expand the
locations it’s offered. Let me just
ask. Would your grandkids, kids like to
play with these Nanoblocks?
