Amazon Fresh Designed for Gen Z & Millennials Loved by Boomers

We all know that ‘Baby Boomers’ built the suburbs buying look a like homes row after row, cul-de-sac after cul-de-sac filling schools and becoming stuck in a commuting to work lifestyle that left no time for the little extra’s according to Steven Johnson, Grocerant Guru® at Tacoma, WA based Foodservice Solutions®.

Well along comes Amazon, they saved the ‘Baby Boomers’ time, simplified their lives and saved them money. Is it any wonder Amazon continues to be one of the fastest growing companies in the USA? With Amazon Fresh two generations of digital natives Gen Z and Millennials not have these problems:

1.       Who don’t want their parents commute,

2.       Who don’t want the complaining at the time it takes to visit the grocery store,

3.       Who don’t want to take the time like their parents too cook dinner from scratch daily.

Well guess what, Amazon Fresh continues to expand across the county attracting Gen Z, Millennials and yes Baby Boomers who still don’t like being forced to walk around the entire perimeter of the grocery store to get bread, milk, and eggs!  Companies the ilk of Kroger, Publix, Albertsons have to be nervous because they are still remodeling 60,000, 70,000, 80,000 square foot stores to look more like yesterday than tomorrow.

Many legacy grocery retailers simply ignored the dynamic growth of the dollar store sector as dollar stores grew in numbers now dollar stores out number legacy grocery stores.  Dollar stores are simply put better retailers than legacy grocery store companies according to Johnson and clearly consumers.

Amazon Fresh has the ability to edify customer relevance technology at the intersection of food retail touchpoints that matter according to Johnson.  So it’s is no surprise that Amazon is “quietly building a national grocery chain,” Bloomberg reported today, saying that at least 28 more Amazon Fresh stores are in the works “from Philadelphia to the Sacramento suburbs.” Currently, the online retail giant operates 11 Amazon Fresh supermarkets in California and Illinois plus a much smaller Amazon Fresh location in the United Kingdom that’s described as a “convenience grocery store.”

Bloomberg also reported that Amazon is piloting its “Just Walk Out” cashierless technology at one of the Amazon Fresh stores in Illinois. The Amazon spokesperson said the technology is being tested at the Naperville Amazon Fresh “for future Just Walk Out stores” but isn’t currently available to the public at that location. Saving time, will also save you money as the checkout-free technology is coming down in price while providing a platform of checkout accuracy few can match according to Johnson.

What’s driving the success of the Amazon Go, Amazon Fresh retail platforms brand focus on consumer touchpoints ignored by companies the ilk of Kroger, Publix, and Albertsons.  Even Walmart once focused on price, has moved to the middle of the grocery store retail sector. So, that leave Kroger, Albertsons, and Publix striving to look more like yesterday that today or tomorrow in the minds-eye of our Grocerant Guru®.
